I enjoyed this essay as well. It is a nice summary of genres and safe theorizing tips.
Safe theorizing tips. That makes us sound like a demented lot, doesn't it? And while it is true that some people fall into that category, I'd say that the majority of us enjoy being real-time readers in part because of the fun of all of the off-the-wall theories! Think of the fun that will be missed by future readers who read all seven books at once! They probably won't spend hours pondering Aberforth and his goats, or spend even a moment wondering whether Dobby's love of socks caused Dumbledore's death. One of the reasons I love Jo so much is that it is, as you mention, practically impossible to predict what she will do. We like to think we've got it figured out (even in some very small way), but how many things have we accurately figured out in the past? Very few. It's still great fun, though. Personally, I anxiously await the declaration of love from Sir Cadogan to The Fat Lady. (About time Violet gets her comeuppance.) -------------------- Avatar by hpboy13 |

Being a pure theorist, I have enjoyed reading this article. I agree on most of what is said, but disagree on others things. I agree that the most important thing is to stick to generalities. JKR herself probably only had a general outline as to where she intended to go with Deathly Hallows when she completed HBP, so it would be almost impossible to guess the specifics with any accuracy. I guess my main disagreement is something left out of the article, not something said. I am a firm believer in that Murphy's law that states: "To find the answer, you must first know the answer." To form any theory that will come from a revelation (different then an explanation) there has to be some puzzle caused by conflicting facts that causes you to go around in circles or be confused. The key in my opinion to a good theory is that the theory proposes a revelation that reconciles this circle of conflicting facts. The only requirement that I put on any revelation that I propose is that it is reasonable and clearly possible under the rules of the world created by JKR. I disagree that we should develope a theory under the "rules of the fanasty genre". I think, instead, we should impose a rule in developing a theory that all adult characters, especially Dumbledore, will act or have acted in a manner that a reasonable person in the same or similiar circumstances would act. If Dumbledore's past actions appear to miss this mark, then that is an area we should, in my opinion, be looking at for a coming revelation that causes his actions that appear to be lacking in common sense to actually be reasonable.
Just my 2 cents. -------------------- As of 6/1/08 all my post are being reviewed and censored by the Leaky Staff, so they probably don't express my true feelings.

Generally speaking, we see Philosopher's Stone/Sorceror's Stone as the beginning of Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows as the end of HP.
T S Eliot thinks otherwise. "What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from." -T S Eliot -------------------- <a href="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/#quiz:results:125201"><img src="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/newquiz/take_quiz/image/125201" /></a> |
