Hello!
I was re-reading Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone a couple of days ago, and I noticed something. pg. 130 (U.S. edition): They found their beds at last: five four-posters hung with deep red, velvet curtains. Their trunks had already been brought up. So I had a few questions: -How were there 5 beds in the room if the students hadn't been sorted yet? When were the beds placed there, and how? Did someone conjure them up? -Who brought their trunks up? And when did someone bring them up? During the feast? Thanks for writing your thoughts. I was just curious, and I wanted to know what others thought! -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

I always assumed it was the House Elves.
they can apperate within the castle, they do everything else and there are lots n lots of them. either that or the house masters perhaps... This post has been edited by coppertopchopperhopper: Jun 3 2009, 03:41 PM -------------------- |

I think it would be the house elves as well. Their magic would probably allow them to move beds and trunks (as well as floating puddings and transferring food from the kitchen to the hall). An elf could be watching the sorting so that they would know if any furniture needed to be added or removed, or they may check the numbers with the sorting hat or the teacher carrying it away after sorting (it could easily be an elf that carries the hat back to the headmaster's office).

I think that there are Never more people sorted to one house than to the other ones. It's always very simmilar and I think that there are never more than 5 students in a dormitorie but coppertopchopperhopper and roonwit are right. It must be the house eleves.

I always thought that it was part of the magic of the castle. That there was some sort of enchantment that made each dormitory enlarge or shrink to fit the number of students sorted into it. Although the dormitory wouldn't change in size outwardly, the dimensions would change inside it, and the correct number of beds be conjured also.
But the house elf theory is more logical. I reckon the moving of all the trunks up to the dormitories would be pretty straightforward. I think Dumbledore sends all Harry's stuff from privet drive to the burrow at the start of HBP with one simple spell. Something similar could be used for all the trunks at the start of each year. And again, the house elves do seem the most logical candidates. |

Although the dormitory wouldn't change in size outwardly, the dimensions would change inside it, and the correct number of beds be conjured also. The resizing theory is also possible, and might be necessary if a large number of students got sorted into one house. (As a side issue I did wonder if Harry would actually find his bed at the end of DH or find a much smaller room with only two beds, since Neville and Seamus would be the only ones attending Hogwarts that year).

As a side issue I did wonder if Harry would actually find his bed at the end of DH or find a much smaller room with only two beds, since only Neville and Seamus would be the only ones attending Hogwarts that year. I wondered the same thing. I think that there would have still been five beds in Harry's dormitory because there were 5 rightful Griffendor 7th year boys. I don't think the castle would recognise the authority of the DEs to say that muggleborns couldn't go to school. I've also wondered about the number of beds when trying to add up how many students go to Hogwarts. If there are 5 girls and five boys in each of 4 houses in each of seven years then there would be 280 total students. But some descriptions in the book make it sound like more (I can't remember where, but there's a refrence to several hundred fans in the Slytherin section at a quiddich match). -------------------- |

I don't see how the number of students can be limited as birthrates for children very from year to year, one year may have far more 1st years than another and there must surely be provision for a student joining the school after first year as happens in the real world.
one might assume that an equal number are sorted into each house, but we are told that the sorting hat sorts according to traits, so what would happen if it had already sorted 5 boys into Slytherin and then came across some one like Tom Riddle??? Surely there must be flexibility in the bed numbers/size of the dormitories... Though I take your points roonwit and ravenseeker. Yet another thing that we need Jo to sort out in her Encycolpedia! -------------------- |

I think that there is no certain amount of people sorted into one house. Maybe there would be 5 Ravenclaw 1st years, but 6 2nd years, and 8 3rd years... I'm not entirely sure, though. Like what about Fred and George's year? Only Fred, George, and Lee are mentioned. . . And what about the Gryffindor girls in Harry's year? I only recall hearing about Hermione, Lavender, and Parvati, unless I am mistaken. . . I think that the Sorting Hat sorts upon qualities, and each year can have a different number of students in a house. Just think if you were the only one in your house in your year! That would be so weird!!! Oh, and now I agree that the house elves must put the beds and trunks in the rooms! -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

So I had a few questions: -How were there 5 beds in the room if the students hadn't been sorted yet? When were the beds placed there, and how? Did someone conjure them up? -Who brought their trunks up? And when did someone bring them up? During the feast? I think that just like many of the other rooms in Hogwarts that the dormitories are bewitched to create as many beds as they need.. I believe that the House Elves bring up the trunks when they are eating, because they would have to wait for the sorting to be complete..
