<font color='#000000'>Does anyone wonder about Dumbledore's unswerving faith in Snape? Why was he so convinced that Snape was his side? I have a theory that I want to share! I believe that Snape was secretly in love with Lily Evans Potter.
Crazy, maybe, but hear me out. Lily Evans was, according to Slughorn in book 6, “a dab hand at Potions”. We all, or course, know that Snape has a love of potion making. I think this was a common ground between the two. We have also seen in book 5, in “Snape’s Worst Memory”, that Lily Evans stood up for Snape. Lupin also said in book 3 that Lily was an uncommonly kind witch. Snape was drawn to her natural warmth, and Snape, the social pariah, felt that Lily Evans was one of the only people who understood him. This affinity that Snape felt for Lily grew into love, but Lily was in love with James Potter. (*Sigh*, Unrequited love!) You may ask, what about Snape’s hostility toward Harry? Harry looks like James, not Lily. Except his eyes. I think I remember reading something about that being important later in the plot. Also, would you like to have a walking, talking reminder of the union between the person you loved and someone else? I think that when Lily Evans was murdered by Voldemort, Snape was absolutely crushed. In book 6, Dumbledore said that Harry had “no idea of the remorse that Professor Snape felt when he realized how Lord Voldemort had interpreted the prophecy.” (That interpretation being that Voldemort had to kill all of the Potters, including Lily) Dumbledore also said that he believed it “to be the greatest regret of his (Snape's)life.” What reason for redemption would Dumbledore trust more that love? The greatest magic in the world is love. We have all seen how JKR’s books have an underlying theme of love conquers all. JKR has also said that she will reveal something huge about Lily Evans, and I think that this is what she is referring to. This is just my theory, and I would love any and all comments you have on it. I could write an essay on this topic, but I will refrain from inflicting that on the general reading public. You are not the first person to question Dumbledore's faith. Also, Snape loving Lily is not a new theory. It can be discussed in the thread Snape's Loyalty in The Princely Nook.
Don't let this prevent you from posting other theories. |

I agree with you and posted this very idea last week, but found that indeed others have already presented the idea, too. Check out "Snape's future sacrifice" a couple of pages down on this discussion topic. Also, "Will JKR do it?" and more recently, "Foe Glass".
