The key word here is looks. Please don't use this thread to continue the "best portrayal of Dumbledore" wars. The first person to mention angry Dumbledore in GoF will be thrown into the cauldron alongside Snape ! From PS (page 12, English edition):- QUOTE Nothing like this man had ever been seen in Privet Drive. He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak which swept the ground and high-heeled buckle boots. His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man's name was Albus Dumbledore. So, who looks like that description the best? Richard Harris who appeared in the first two movies, or Michael Gambon, who has taken over the mantle since Harris's sad death. Personally, I think it's a difficult one. Dumbledore is around 150 years old and so I think Harris had the correct aged look, but Gambon has the twinkle in his eye that Harris didn't. I think though that Gambon's clothes help give off the air of eccentricity that DD has and would help him move about quicker than the clothes that Harris wore as DD. In the scene at the end of SS (when he was choosing a Bertie Bott's bean) he came very close to my imagined Dumbledore. But he lacked that twinkle otherwise. Not to get too much into the portrayal, but I always thought of Dumbledore as someone who really likes people and enjoys himself or at least is amused by life. Neither Dumbledore conveys this, in my opinion. -------------------- : )

Harris had the long silvery hair (with no tie in his beard), I liked his costume better, and I disagree that he didn't have a twinkle in his eyes. Harris definitely had it, and he could convey so much just through one little look over his glasses. Gambon doesn't have that. I saw no twinkle in Gambon's eyes, I don't like the little tie in his beard (not to mention his hair color isn't silvery. It has a yellowish tinge to it.), I didn't like his excessively long fingernails in PoA, and I don't like his costume. I'm Harris' girl through and through. -------------------- "J.K. Cauldron Bottom Measurer Posts: 99 Joined: 6:52am February 7, 2005 Location: Sydney, Australia	Richard Harris just seemed to look the part for me, his costuming was great bright colors and he seemed well put together and had the look of the drawing on the back of the UK PS. Gambon's grubby appearance with the nails, the same worn grey robe, and tangled hair just seem to be the opposite of the Dumbledore we hear of in the books. With new costuming and a different wig on Gambon I might change my mind but for now it has to be Richard Harris

Professional Diagon Alley Window Shopper Posts: 73 Joined: 1:14pm July 23, 2005	I think Richard Harris had the look of a tall and very old, silvery, long hair and beard wizard that he was exactly described in the book. he also had that sparkle in his eyes. Just look at Mrs. Brisby's siggy, that look of DD seems as if he knows something we dont. lol

For me it came out in Gambon in the end of the P.o.A. when Harry & Hermione have just finished the mission. But in the end all over apperance it is Harris. -------------------- WP

I think Harris had the kind of longer, leaner frame that I always associated with Dumbledore. I have yet to see the twinkle in Gambon's eyes, but perhaps I missed something. Richard Harris always had this look about him that told me "he knows," whereas Gambon always looks like he is still trying to figure it all out. I've yet to get the sense from Gambon as a man who looks like he holds the burden of "knowing" on his shoulders. I also can't help but adore the looks that Harris shot over those half moon spectacles. They were hysterical! Like the one he gives Lockhart in CoS when they find Mrs. Norris.
