Here is another activity for people to give their opinion on. Who looks the best Dumbledore?

The key word here is looks. Please don't use this thread to continue the "best portrayal of Dumbledore" wars. The first person to mention angry Dumbledore in GoF will be thrown into the cauldron alongside Snape wink.gif !

From PS (page 12, English edition):-

QUOTE
Nothing like this man had ever been seen in Privet Drive. He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak which swept the ground and high-heeled buckle boots. His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man's name was Albus Dumbledore.

So, who looks like that description the best? Richard Harris who appeared in the first two movies, or Michael Gambon, who has taken over the mantle since Harris's sad death.

Personally, I think it's a difficult one. Dumbledore is around 150 years old and so I think Harris had the correct aged look, but Gambon has the twinkle in his eye that Harris didn't.

I think though that Gambon's clothes help give off the air of eccentricity that DD has and would help him move about quicker than the clothes that Harris wore as DD.

It's a toughy.....but I'm going with Gambon.

Richard Harris was exactly as I pictured Dumbledore and I think he really would have given DD the right personality if he could have done the rest of the movies, alas...c'est la vie sad.gif

I am so not into the hippie-ish Dumbledore. Dumbledore is supposed to look wise and act eccentric. They are two very different things.

I was hoping this thread might speculate an alternate to Richard Harris (RIP) or Michael Gambon. I find that both have their pro's and cons.

I feel that, should we speculate for a moment, Gambon's Dumbledore will evolve as we see more of the character interact in the movies (OotP and HBP will have much more Dumbledore involvement).

I always thought that Ian McClellan (of Lord of the Rings and X-men fame) would have made a wonderful Dumbledore - he has the look, the acting ability to be commanding yet whimsical at the same time (see opening of Fellowship at Bags End).

I can't think of any others off the top of my head. sorcerer.gif

I agree with this, but further more Harris was the perfect Dumbledore to me. Looks, acting, everything...

And I don't like Gambon at all. Partly, no doubt because nothing's more hopeless than replacing someone who was perfect... But I hate his actions towards Harry in GOF. Book Dumbledore would never shake Harry physically... sad.gif Or hurt Ron as in POA. sad.gif Of course, that may be out of Gambon's control, but I think his attitude towards Harry is less of fatherly affection more or less well hidden (as it should be) and more of ignorance. But the change did come with the new actor, so...

Isn't it possible for a mod to remove the malfunctioning poll and replace it with a new one?

Harris all the way. Older, taller, thinner, and I have seen a twinkle whenever he looked over his half moon spectacles - think: SS - explaining in hospital wing how brilliant he was with the mirror of erised, SS - bertie botts, COS - looking at Lockhart over petrified Mrs. Norris, COS - looking at Harry at the end when he tells Lucius "Don't worry, I will". Plus I like the flowing beard and hair much better - the beard ponytail they have on Gambon really bugs me. Last but not least, Gambon is too heavy.

Unfortunately not. It's a tekkie problem and it's on the list of things to do, but as you guys can appreciate, there are many little glitches that need to be sorted out after the forum conversion. Unfortunately none of the previous polls transferred over in any of the forums and they have to be done individually.

Also, a little reminder to keep the discussion to just the image of Dumbledore, not the acting skills of Harris or Gambon. The place to debate that little hot potato is Argent Scrims. Thanks smile.gif .

Oh, sorry! blush.gif But I think Harris looked perfect, whereas Gambin looks like any old man, grey and troubled, rather than having any glint in his eye and warmth for others. sad.gif

And thanks for explaining about the poll...

I have been advised by our fabulous tekkie Alex that it may be a while before the poll is fixed, so I thought I would start a new poll and thread, merge the old thread comments with this one and carry on with the discussion.

So, to reiterate, who do you think looks the best Dumbledore? Richard Harris or Michael Gambon?

EDIT - thumbup.gif It worked! Those who previously voted can now vote again.

My thoughts excactly! That's why I have just voted for Harris thumbup.gif

towel.gif I will wave the flag for Gambon, (I know the smilie is waving a towel but it's the best I could find!!)

Think back to the scene in PoA, when Harry and Hermione return after rescuing Sirius and Buckbeak. They rush up to Gambon's DD and say "we did it", or words to that effect. With a fabulous glint in his eye he replies "did what?" and waves his fingers at them mischieviously and then sweeps down the staircase.

That is DD to me. He just looked perfect. I don't like the grubby fingers and rings, I'll concede on that, but he has the look of a man who has energy, despite being old.

Edited to fix coding.
