Hogwarts is, of course, a school and the theme of Education figures in all of the books. From the beginning, there was disagreement on what and whom to teach, especially between Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin. It seems that since then, though, not much had changed in the school except the names of the Headmasters, and all four houses have contributed to a well-run school, except for a slight difficulty in keeping the Defense Against the Dark Arts position filled.

In Order of the Phoenix, we meet Dolores Umbridge, arguably the most evil teacher created in literature, as the newest DADA teacher, assigned by the Minister of Magic himself. Umbridge begins the year with a speech about the need for changes at Hogwart's with a "balance between old and new…between tradition and innovation" (OotP, Scholastic hdbk, 213). After she is named the Hogwarts High Inquisitor, Educational Decrees are passed at an amazing rate and the school becomes a government-run institution, with teachers being dismissed, including Dumbledore himself. The students and even teachers rebel against Umbridge's authority, which includes the use of corporal punishment.

Meanwhile, the fifth year students are also dealing with the pressure of O.W.L.S., exams which establish what classes they will take in their upper years and what career track they will follow. There's a lot stress and anxiety, especially when Umbridge refuses to teach practical defense tactics to the students. We see the clash between teaching methods of teachers. We also see just how important education is for many of the students, especially the members of Dumbledore's Army, who secretly meet in order to teach and learn with each other.

Let's look closer at Education in the Harry Potter books, especially OotP.

  • Is there any sense to Umbridge's declaration that "progress for progress's sake must be discouraged, for our tried and true traditions often require no tinkering." (Scholastic, 213) Do traditional methods like recitation and memorization work?
  • Does the takeover of the school by the Ministry remind you of any current events? Do you think JK Rowling is trying to make a point about education systems and/or the government? What do you think the Ministry's role should be at Hogwarts?
  • Do any of the teachers remind you of your own educators? There are several different teaching methods shown. Which do you think is the most effective?
  • What do the O.W.L.S. tests remind you of in our own education systems? What about the testing anxiety which is shown? Is this healthy stress? Should students be "taught to the test"?
  • The students are admittedly not always on their best behavior. Why do you think Rowling shows them slacking off almost as often as she shows them working hard? Is she encouraging "skiving off" with all of Fred and George's snackboxes?

You have brought up something important here Flora. Both teachers and students have responsibilities. You can have the greatest teacher in the world, but if the student doesn't put forth any effort he/she isn't going to learn anything - and I don't think it is the teacher's fault. On the other hand, you can have smart, motivated students, but with a teacher who is either incompetant, degrading (like Snape), or has unrealistic expectations, they aren't going to learn much - and it's not the students' fault. There is a relationship between student and teacher that needs to exist for learning to really occur. Each one has a role to play and responsibilities to uphold. Just like the saying "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink", both students and teachers have to participate in the classroom experience. If one side is not willing to play, then the whole game stops.
