I can imagine that being a woman in the 1800's was a stifling existence. Emma is bright, and she does not have enough to challenge her. She does not have to make a good match in order to live comfortably, but she still does not have the same social freedoms that a man has. Interestingly enough, she does have the option to educate herself by reading and study, and she chooses not to do so, by doing that she makes herself a victim of the culture.
I found it pretty funny that Emma would seemingly mean and want to educate herself, but would never really get much farther than making to-read lists lol.gif On the other hand, it also shows that she kinda lacks determination - at least in that field, for she seems quite determined when it comes to her little schemes of matching Harriet to Mr Elton.

On a different note, I've been thinking that it's kinda strange that I can sort of so easily relate to Emma when she's so very different from what I am, I think. I guess, it's the naive part that's the most similar - and I find that naivety really cute for some reason; and I think it hilarious how she is so clueless and can't see that Mr Elton likes her and not Harriet. I guess she's just so focussed on her friend that she simply gets blind to anything else - "you see what you expect to see" sort of thing.

I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine. (P&P)
