After Louisa's injury in Lyme, Austen says of Anne "Without emulating the feelings of an Emma towards her Henry, she would have attended on Louisa with a real zeal above the common claims of regard, for his sake".

Who are Emma and Henry? My first thought was towards Emma Dashwood, but Mr Knightley's first name was John so I threw that explanation out.

So, can anyone explain the reference to Emma and Henry? Or do you have other questions about the text? Perhaps questions about culture at the time the book was written, or historical references or, in fact, anything else connected to the book or the time in which it was set.

Actually, although George III was the king during Jane Austen's lifetime, he was declared insane and his son ruled as regent in the early 1800s (which is why the period is known as "Regency"). Austen never liked the regent (later George IV) because he was extravagant and immoral but, was "told" to dedicate Emma to him.
Hope this helps!
