Fallen Family
The Malfoys By Lorie Damerell / Asphodel Wormwood This thread is to discuss Asphodel Wormwood's chapter on the Malfoys in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. What will happen to Draco now he is wanted by both the Death Eaters and the order of the Phoenix? Will Lucius manage to break out of Azkaban? Clicking on the essay title in this post will take you to the chapter. This post has been edited by SeverineSnape: Feb 20 2007, 01:17 AM -------------------- Jeeves, I am not awake. Fine essay indeed!
There are just two things which irritate me a bit:
Thanks for an essay that made me post in the "unfogging" section - for the first and alkst time probably. -------------------- |

I think there's another option for what will happen to Draco: he'll return to LV and be accepted. Not because he succeeded in killing Dd, because he didn't. But the DE witnesses to Draco's inability to kill Dd have no idea how long Draco delayed, and so may just think that Draco was toying with Dd and Snape burst in and stole his thunder. (These DEs weren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, you must admit.) I think Snape will be trusted now by LV -- I think that was as much a reason for Dd insisting that Snape kill him (yes, I'm of that camp) as was the intention to save Draco from being a murderer. Dd has provided, with his death, the perfect way for Snape to get back in LV's "good graces." LV would NEVER suspect that someone would willingly die for such a reason.
Also, Draco did not entirely fail LV. He actually had two charges from LV -- to kill Dd and to get DEs into Hogwarts. (We know that Snape was unaware of the vanishing cabinet task, because he kept asking Draco what he was doing; makes one wonder whether he knew of either task when he made the Unbreakable Vow, because he and Dd might have figured the other one out later.) Draco tells Dd that he was the only one who realized about the vanishing cabinets, and he went to LV to tell him that he could open a way into Hogwarts. We know that LV wanted into Hogwarts, because Dd says to LV when LV asks for the DADA job that they both know that LV is not interested in teaching. We also know that LV sent his stupidest and most bloodthirsty soldiers to Hogwarts, and they, predictably, cause quite a ruckus. I think LV wanted a cover for something else; I think LV wanted to get into Hogwarts himself, and to do something horcrux-related. Find one, hide one, make one, something. So, Draco has not really failed. Even if he had, I think Snape is sufficiently skilled at inventing lies and hiding the fact that they are lies, that he can convince LV to accept Draco with little or no punishment. And Snape, for all his faults, seems to have a teacher's instinct for protecting his pupils, even when one of them is Harry. So, I think Draco and Snape will both end up back at DE headquarters. But Snape is still Dd's man, and Draco owes Dd a life-debt, for all those times he tried to kill Dd and Dd could have had him chucked into Azkaban or worse. |

QUOTE potterliterati: We know that Snape was unaware of the vanishing cabinet task, because he kept asking Draco what he was doing; makes one wonder whether he knew of either task when he made the Unbreakable Vow, because he and Dd might have figured the other one out later. Excellent point, potterliterati. What does he gain by doing this if he is a loyal DE? It would do nothing to protect or advance his supposed "cover" as he spies on DD. He has nothing to gain as a DE by securing the trust of either of these two women (though much to gain as a member of the OOP). I suppose one could argue that it was a case of natural human curiosity, but I have trouble with the idea that he would "make" (not just "take," --Jo seems careful about this word) an unbreakable vow just to satisfy idle curiosity. It seems to me that if he were a truly loyal DE he would have reported Narcissa's violation of LV's orders as soon as possible. It makes no sense to have taken this vow, even out of his natural arrogance, unless he thought that be doing so he might find out what LV was really planning. I cannot think of any motivation for agreeing to take the vow on the basis of his obvious lie that he already knew Draco's assignment---except that he retains a loyalty to Dumbledore. There is the slight alternative that he remains truly loyal to neither side, and that by gaining knowledge of any kind he is trying only to protect himself. I might be willing to go along with that, but that would mean that he is NOT a truly loyal DE, but a man trying desperately to play both ends of the game and losing ground every moment. I don't think that is the case--I believe that he is a thoroughly nasty piece of work, arrogant and spiteful, but that he is Dumbledore's man through and through. I suppose I could also accept that his loyalty is ultimately to himself and that at the end of DH we will be left wondering forever about his true character (I wouldn't like it but I can imagine it). But I CANNOT see any way that he is truly a loyal and dedicated DE. That just doesn't make sense with the texts we have so far. I think he is truly trying to save Draco Malfoy (an unfortunate boy from a fallen family) just as much as he truly tried to save Harry (an unfortunate boy from a murdered family) on more than one occasion. -------------------- click the Q "And, if there is need to speak in brief summary of this power, we shall find that none of the things which are done with intelligence take place without the help of speech, but that in all our actions as well as in all our thoughts speech is our guide, . . ." I think LV will accept Draco for now. He disarmed DD and, as mentioned above, found the way into the supposedly impenetrable protective spells. LV may be too distracted by Snape, his loss of him as a spy and his actions, to question Draco thourghly. As both Snape and Draco seem to be Occlumens they could potentially make Draco's involvement seem more decisive in DD's murder than it was.
As for the other DE's there I don't think they will have much to say, they weren't at the graveyard so don't seem in LV's inner circle and judging by their actions aren't exactly veteran shock troops, more like amateurs while LV is busy elsewhere. I hadn't thought about LV being in the castle as well but it's probably unlikely. He was more likely in an entirely different place, if he had used the vanishing cabinet he would have been seen by the DE's. They do not act as if he was there, this is especially visible in Draco's actions. He might have been seen and as there weren't a trail of dead bodies in his wake he probably did not enter the castle although I think he wanted to at one time. (Even if it was just to sit in the DADA teachers chair while no one was looking). As for Lucius I think LV will leave him where he is in Azkaban as punishment, or a time out, even if he does breakout his other captured DE's. Narcissa is not, as far as we know, a DE just connected to them. I think she will continue to be worried for Draco and they may end up taking DD's offer, even if the Order weren't expecting it. The Fallen Family of the Malfoy's will I'm sure still have some part to play. For what that is we will have to wait and see. |

I was just re-examining the British cover art and noticed something that made me wonder about Draco's future. I had always assumed that the three characters on the front of the cover were Ron, Harry, and Hermione, but upon closer examination, the boy next to Harry has hair that is more blonde than red. And he's wearing green robes...Could this be Draco? Will he also enter the search for Horcruxes?
I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks, and I apologize if others have already noticed this..I can only keep up with all the busy discussion infrequently! |
