Yes, I know the ethics of fanfic are hotly debated. But I write it (for HP, Torchwood, and I kinda do for Doctor Who) and I love it. Any other fanficcers out there? Where do you post? What do you think about the artistic validity of fanfic?

I'm not a big HP fanficcer. I write it for Pendragon (which is a series I'm sure none of you have heard of, so I'm not going to bother explaining). Most of my stuff is posted on my Pendragon forum, which I'm not going to link to at risk of advertising. I also write some for certain video games. *is a geek*
As for the artistic validity, I liked how someone described it on PotterCast, as it being "playing in another writer's sandbox". I think it definitiely doesn't take as much skill as creating your own characters and plots, but still has a lot of value. -------------------- Proud Member of Ravenclaw House |

I've heard of Pendragon, BrettMac (can't say I know too much about it though

Well...i'm not a fanfic author, but I'm an avid reader of HP fanfics. Especially romance ones. I love them! I think there is great artistic value to them. They take the basic structure that an author has given and flesh it out into a different direction that is, while not as good as the original, is really, really good.
Mods...are we allowed to post links to fanfics? I'm not sure if we can....'cause I think it'd break the rules. Just wanting to make sure before I do. -------------------- "If you believed as he did. Mods...are we allowed to post links to fanfics? I'm not sure if we can....'cause I think it'd break the rules. Just wanting to make sure before I do. Great question. You may post any PG 13 compliant writing piece (including fanfic) up to 1000 words in the Share thread. You may wish to check out the writer's forum rules. *takes off mod hat I have yet to be able to write fan fiction. I've tried starting a few times with Harry Potter, but it never really went anywhere. I've heard that Fanfic a great way to get into writing because you're starting with characters you already know quite well. Has anyone found that to be true for them? How has writing fan fic been easier (or more difficult) than other types of writing? -------------------- Not-so-proud member of P.C.A.A.: acceptance is the first step to recovery.

Well I tend to write it only for myself, and always just HP. What I mean is that if there's something in the books that bothers me because I can't quite figure it out (for example that Ginny 'never gave up' on Harry and yet had other boyfriends) I will write a little to figure out how it could be. They are all short, and all more or less just for me so I have never posted any of it anywhere. A lot of mine is Ginny-related because I'm trying to have her figured out in more detail because I really like her for Harry
As far as ease of writing, my own characters are far and away easier than fanfic. I have written novels about my own characters, but could never do that with someone else's because I don't inhabit them or they don't inhabit me in the same way. On the other hand I only began writing fanfic this year and have written about my own characters for much longer, so that could be why they are easier for me. -------------------- |

Well, I write fanfiction, but I don't actually post it anywhere because it isn't very good. Mostly, it's just to help me get out of writer's block. I write it for Harry Potter and I've written a Newsies fanfic as well.
As for reading, it depends on the author, though I think I'm actually really picky. The only fanfics I've really enjoyed are by Chickadee and Cassandra's Cross. I don't have a link to the former, but here's the latter's fanfiction.net url: Cassandra's HP fanfics -------------------- "Time passes in moments, which, rushing by, define the path of a life just as surely as they lead towards its end. How rarely do we stop to examine that path, to see the reasons why all things happen?"

The only problem I have with fanfics are the ones that are entirely about shipping (sorry, shippers, I'm not one of you). I like fan fiction that I would read as I would a HP book, or in my case, a Pendragon book. And I'm not a fan of romance.
Not that shipping fanfic is wrong, I just don't enjoy it. But that's me. -------------------- Proud Member of Ravenclaw House |

I find that for my HP fic I really don't go with the "regulars" in the series like the Trio, Snape, Dumbledore, etc., because I like fleshing out the minor characters and/or minor ships (Big Percy/Penelope fan right here!). I write serious stuff and I've written some silly stuff, but I find it really annying that my serious works that I'm really proud of, like my drabble Bitter, get one or two reviews while my exercise in Potter farce (Remus Is Gay) gets nearly 40 reviews.

I don't have a link to the former, but here's the latter's fanfiction.net url: Cassandra's HP fanfics I agree, Cassandra's Cross does write some really good fan fics. I also read one of Chickadee's stories and thought it was really nice. I read fanfiction a lot, mainly when I'm bored and have nothing else to do. I used to write some, but I only posted one story because I usually don't like what I write. I haven't written any fanfics in about three years now, preferring to read other people's. |
