Yes, I know the ethics of fanfic are hotly debated. But I write it (for HP, Torchwood, and I kinda do for Doctor Who) and I love it. Any other fanficcers out there? Where do you post? What do you think about the artistic validity of fanfic?

I don't write fanfic but I do read some HP. The problem with fan-fic is just that most of it is so unutterably awful, and you have to wade through so much dross to find anything worth reading. I like the Shoebox project, which is incredibly well-written; it's more like reading a book than something deriviative. It probably helps that it's only about the Marauder generation. I get really annoyed with anything that strays from cannon-- although I realize how unreasonable that is!

I read fanfiction when I have time and am not reading a 'real' book.

My favourite sit is SIYE.co.uk - Because I like my ships to be canon. tongue.gif

Unfortunately some of the fanfics you come across on other sites are dreadful, poorly thought out and un-betaed. The spelling and grammer is often so dreadful that they are too hard to read even if the plot is interesting.

But now and then you find some gems!

Personally, I like Strider's stories, but the latest one 'I need a Hero' is unfinished and hasn't been up-dated in a long time, so I suspect there is some problem that has stopped Strider from finishing it.

Normaly I only read completed stories, but I made an exception and now I don't know how it finishes! That's a big problem in fanfiction and is very frustrating!

I've even tried writing a couple of things and got some nice reviews as well as some not so nice ones! rolleyes.gif
But I'm glad I gave it a shot and might try to do some more when (if) I have more time to myself!

Fanfiction is certainly an interesting beast. Personally I don't find it as satisfying creatively as writing entirely original material, but I understand the enjoyment of it. It seems a lot of people write fanficition in their heads even if they never commit it to paper. For me, I use fanfiction as a warm-up/writing exercise. I'll take 5 or 10 minutes and just force myself to put pen to paper, to get my creative juices flowing. It's easy to play with characters that are already fleshed out. I can sketch out a quick Ron/Hermione scene that's floating around in my head, ignoring all pretenses of grammar, just to get going and then move on to my original work.

At present, my fanfiction is confined to the pages of my journal and will almost certainly never see the light of day tongue.gif

After I finished DH, I was a bit adrift Potter-wise, and I was really craving more. I hadn't discovered the Lounge yet, but I did discover Checkmated. Since that day in early August, I never looked back. I'd had no idea that fan fiction existed in the world, but I've literally read hundreds since. I found out a lot of the authors I admire immensely are at Live Journal, and they're now among my closest friends.

I never intended to write any fiction, ever. I didn't feel inspired to do so, and I didn't think it would be any good. I went to college for journalism, and I love to write a good essay, but that's quite different from fiction! One of my author friends challenged me to write a drabble (100 words) for a Christmas fiction "fest" she was having at her journal. I had no intention of participating, but one my way home from grocery shopping one night in early December, a story just came to me. Over dinner that night, I typed it up in about one hour. Christmas Surprises - which turned out to be way more than 100 words - was my very first work of fiction, ever, in my life.

It's been quite a wild ride since then. It was put up at Checkmated (which was an honor beyond my dreams as a reader of fan fic!), and has more positive reviews than I ever imagined, and it was even nominated for an R/Hr Award at Live Journal. Wow. To have someone tell me they love something I created is a real thrill, and when I wrote a second story that readers also enjoyed (Know the Right Moment), I was overjoyed to have some readers say, "Hey, I know who you are! You wrote Christmas Surprises - I love that story!"

I mean, heck, I didn't even know I was a writer at all! Every time I write a little story (I only have the two full-length fictions...the rest are all about 500 words or less) and someone tells me they enjoy it, I'm validated just a little bit more as the author I didn't know I was. It's been really, really cool.

So...that's the very long version of what could have been a short post: Yes, I love fan fiction. Yes, I'm a writer of fan fiction. Yes, I'm proud of that fact.

*side note* I only, only, only write canon, and I've never written anything that wasn't Ron/Hermione. But any of you who know me knew that'd be the case, right? biggrin.gif

I write it but be warned: Composing fan fiction can become similar to visiting that bar at happy hour with friends after work. The first time you're there for the friends. The fifteenth time you're there for the 1/2 priced booze.
The appreciation and praise of readers is thrilling and one can get lost in it. It's easy to become diverted from one's original work. I've scribbled out very nice novella lenth fan fictions in the same lenth of time it's taken me to write an opening sentence to my original work.

Really? I must have missed some heated debates.
I think that it's ok as long as the author doesn't object, and the writers inform that the world and characters don't belong to them, and don't try to profit from their writing. The amount of fanfiction mirrors the popularity of a book, tv series or a movie. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, imho.

What do you think about the artistic validity of fanfic?

I think that there are people who simply waste their talent on fanfics when they could gain acclaim for their original works under their real names. Fanfiction is like flying on borrowed wings. It can be good, even great, but it is still... well, borrowed.
Is that what you were asking? I'm very sleepy right now but too excited to wait with answering till tomorow...

I love fanfiction, including HP books. Although I don't read as many fanfics as some of the people I know, it's a huge pleasure to find a well-written story that is set in the Potterverse. It's just another way of sharing your love for the books with others. And I'm very open-minded to writers' imagination – I accept any concept or shipping as long as it's well-written and properly justified. Though I'm not particularly fond of "two characters being locked in an empty room" kind of stories that don't bother to show the world that they're set in. Rich, lengthy, well-researched and detailed stories, that's what I like. You know, if there's Snape in it and he's preparing a potion, I expect to see that he is using adequate ingredients etc. I like one particular fanfic very much but I don't think it would be proper to give you a link here as it is above PG13.

I am writing a fanfic that deals with post-DH events, slightly alternative to the author's version wink.gif But I'm not doing it to show anyone, just for my peace of mind. It just helps me to deal with my post-Potter depression... But I find my more "original" stories easier to write, maybe because they are based in the real world, not a magical one, and the characters are invented by me so I don't have to remember their background.

To read a fanfic, I usually go to fanfiction.net, fictionalley.org, fanlib.com and many more.

I love to read fanfiction, but I've never been able to write fanfiction well enough. I've tried, many times, but somehow, taking these characters and putting them in totally different situations and events is not such an easy task. As a writer of fanfiction, you're limited to what you know about the character and you have to put that into use. You can't make up qualities which are contrsting. I mean, I know there are a lot of fan fictions which differ from what is known about the characters from the original creator, but it then makes it even more difficult to be believable.

But I don't think it's ethically wrong in any way, as long as it's just for fan purpose, and it doesn't involve any profit-making, and of course, the fact that the original creator is okay with it.
