The fear was exactly what was mentioned earlier on this thread – if the creator of a show (or in this case, book) coincidentally incorporated something into their canon that had been first sighted on a fanfic site, all sorts of legal complications could arise. Thus, Whedon explained, he had to be able to say in all honesty that he’d never laid eyes on any Buffy fanfic at any point in time. Even with the different copyright laws in the UK in effect, I would assume JKR would be in a similar situation. She deals with enough crap as it is with folks claiming they're the inspiration for her stories. ;) Most likely, she has folks from her agency skimming the boards periodically to keep an eye out for anything particularly troublesome from a legal standpoint.
