QUOTE(Lady Stratford @ Mar. 26 2005,08:37 ) QUOTE(Darcey @ Mar. 26 2005,07:03 ) I wonder what she thinks of the enormous amount of fanfic that exists revolving around her world. As I recall she has a lovely statement written in legalese that says she appreciates that people enjoy taking her work out for a spin on their own but feels very strongly about not exposing children to sexually explicit content regarding the characters. From what I understand, there's not a whole lot she can do without turning the fan base against her. She'd have to go on a witch hunt (pardon the expression) of sorts to eradicate it, so she's better off to leave it alone. As a result, I don't think she's ever explicitly stated to the press how she feels about fanfic.
LS That sounds right. I remember seeing an interview in which it was specifically mentioned that she was concerned about her young audience going online to read HP fanfic and stumbling upon very illicit materials, particularly stories which involve pedophilia. (I can relate: As a parent and an avid fanfic reader, it actually does freak me out how easy it would be for my children to find such graphic stories.)
As for the legal issues behind JKR admitting to visiting a fanfic site, I read an interview in which Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy) stated that, legally, he couldn’t set foot near a Buffy fanfic site (figuratively speaking) until after the show was off the air. The fear was exactly what was mentioned earlier on this thread – if the creator of a show (or in this case, book) coincidentally incorporated something into their canon that had been first sighted on a fanfic site, all sorts of legal complications could arise. Thus, Whedon explained, he had to be able to say in all honesty that he’d never laid eyes on any Buffy fanfic at any point in time. Even with the different copyright laws in the UK in effect, I would assume JKR would be in a similar situation. She deals with enough crap as it is with folks claiming they're the inspiration for her stories. ;)
Most likely, she has folks from her agency skimming the boards periodically to keep an eye out for anything particularly troublesome from a legal standpoint.
All things considered, thank heavens she is so willing to allow her fans to borrow her world in fanfic and fanart (which we’ve all seen her publicly commend)!
