I have tried every single one, and each one is okay at somethings.
Proboards is very easy to skin. Invision power Board is very admin friendly. There is nothing you can't do with vBulletin. Simple Machine Forums are very simple and easy, MyBulletinBoard is perfect for Communities because of all the user-friendly features they have, Invisionfree is hands-down the easiest to run and, well, its completely free. There are a few other fairly good softwares out there, but these are some of the best. So, here is a few questions:

PHPBB is fairly good, but I rather dislike their mods and hacks. Everything is just that much harder and the hacks aren't as advanced as vB and IPB. Not even close.

PHPBB is very thumbs-down in my book. Its one-click install makes it very setup-friendly, so I can see why people might want to use it, but it's the Microsoft of free forums when it comes to fixing its own security issues, and its features....leave something to be desired. It's free, yes, but so are many other, superior boards.
As far as free forums go, one brand of forum that we were thinking of using for the Lounge at one point is called Infinite Core, which was made by the second creative team behind Ikonboard (the original one being Matt Mecham and some others, who went off and founded Invision). Unfortunately, it seems to be a bit deserted, judging from the look of their support forums at the moment. That's a shame, really, because there are some very bright minds behind it. Personally, my favorite on that list--and I've had to weigh them all before--would have to be Invision. It has great product support, it's very extensible and has a massive community of hack-designers and emoticon-designers and skin-designers and so forth, and as you say above, 62442al_Man, it's very admin-friendly. --Nick |

I've never heard of PHPBB, but I did look it up and like the looks of it. I have only used Proboards although I have seen forums created through Invisionand vBulletin. That's about it though. I'd have to say I really like proboards, only from lack of experience with the other options.

PHPBB allows me to do that unless you know how to do that, help would be appreciated also i like that it has preinstalled templates that you can choose from I am going to try the boards you suggested nick because you seem to know alot about them edit: it seems that is something you have to download and upload again to another site, I like the ones where you can have your forum hosted on the site directly. Also the reason I like the forum service i'm using now for chamber of chat club forum (jconserv.net) I like that it doesn't have some sort of "FREE" in the name of the url ex: _____________.jconserv.net compaired to: ____.invisionfree.com/___________/index.php This post has been edited by Midnight Phoenix: Oct 24 2006, 04:43 PM -------------------- Please Help Me Improve This Unfinished Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpLjqGOwvJs [img][/img] Click Image To View "Phoenix Productions" |

Hmm, you know I never heard of them. Ill check them out Nick, thanks.
I hear that InvisionFree 2 has been delayed again. I hope they get it out soon, they say it will be good. One thing I thought I'd bring up is the recent IPB price changes. I was going to buy another IPB but with those price changes...I don't know. Plus, now, they are getting rid of the Lifetime license. Now everyone pays for the software every six months and I don't really like that idea. But the newest IPB is brilliant. I can't remember the version, but it is perfect for communities and such. Can't wait to see what vB does. They have a lot of work to catch up to the new features they are up against. I just hope they don't make price changes for their sofware too... -------------------- |

I've used PHPBB2 before. I find it a little...unfriendly sort of. I'm waiting for PHPBB3 to see how it'll be. SMF looks rather promising, ive dabbled with it a bit. I'm considering it for a future project. Invisionfree is generlly pretty good, but I like more control. Plus, everyone agrees it's best to avoid paying $$$ for a license, right? BTW, I have a mega-bias against proboards for some reason.

Proboards are the easiest to skin and you can make very good skins with it if you wanted to. Nothing complex, but definetely comforting.
I don't have a problem with proboards, except for their service, hacks, etc. Don't like that very much. It is too limited. But for test boards or just for fun, I've used 'em. Sparingly though. -------------------- |
