Hi there, I just poked in here to see what was going on and saw this thread, thought I'd put in my 2 cents (for what it's worth).

I've used most of these at various times, and they do all have their pros and cons. For a board with volume of this size, I have no idea which I'd recommend, but I have used one that I like for smaller volume called Beehive Forums. I don't think it's free, but it does have features that phpBB doesn't have that I really like. It might give you some ideas. Snitz is another I've used, but I think it's based on the same software that this forum uses. They're both pretty decent to use both for users and for admin, but I've never used either for a very large volume board like this.

For "large" boards, I'd have to say that nothing other than Invision Power Board (what this uses) or vBulletin.

Meh, I'm not really partial to anything in particular. I'd probably have to say VBulliten though

I hear rumors that Zetaboards is coming out very soon. I'm eager to try it out. That is from the makers of IF, I think...

I've used all of those and I've used phpBB, Invision Free, Invision Paid, SMF and VBulletin from the administrators point of view.

phpBB and SMF are the best for installation. They are so brilliantly easy. However, to get what you really want out of them you need to add the hacks and the extra installs. phpBB's really bad at that, and SMF is far better, but when I used it, it just didn't have the support it needed.

Invision and VBulletin are the most annoying to install; however, from skinning, adminning and everything else, they are far superior. The security is awesome and you can do pretty much everything with VB as people who go there actually know what they are on about and because you pay such a premium for the software, the mods and hacks are of the same quality as well.

From a users point of view, I like VB and phpBB the best.

Among free and open source software, phpBB tops my list. Fairly good product, huge MOD database, and pretty good support.

If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host : create forum

Hope this can help!

Can you toss us a link? Why is it your favorite? What does it have or do that other forum software doesn't have or do?
