It was not mentioned that harry saw fawkes , he thought he saw a phoenix, it could be a real phoenix and very well could be fawkes,
maybe it went back to east asia, like India or China to catch up with old pals until Harry gets into trouble.

I was wondering if the phoenix like vision Harry had might have been DD's Patronus - I wonder if it's possible for a wizard to "save" a last message and deliver it after his death.

I like the idea that this phoenix-like thingy Harry thought he saw in the flames might have been DD's patronus.. after all the patronus is a kind of spirit-guardian, JKR said. When I first read it I thought it must have been DD's soul "escaping" and thought it just toooooo much kitsch (but then again I just hated the whole chapter anyway because I thought it way just tear-jerking sob stuff...). But a Patronus as a way of a last greeting... yeah, why not? Maybe it goes to show that DD was actually planning to die that way (killed by Snape) and thus his death was kind of a happy thought to him?

As for the question where Fawkes went.. I suppose he's just on his own now. We don't know how old Fawkes is as he cannot die, so he might be thousands of years old. JKR said no one ever owned him before DD did, that suggest it's really Fawkes who picks his "owner". He might just be free now the way he was before he joined DD. Maybe he'll live in the Forbidden Forest, maybe he'll go home to whereever he's from. I think he might come back in Deathly Hallows, though. He might pick a new owner.. Harry, Snape, McGonagall...?

i like the idea of it being A phoenix, it could be a totally different phoenix that maybe heard the song of fawkes??
Or that DD turned into a phoenix after its death or phoenixes rise from the ashes of very powerful wizard?

My feeling is that Fawkes will be making a return appearance in Deathly Hallows. When I read the passage, I thought it was Fawkes- I hadn't even given it a second thought. And, as JKR has so often revealed, that is not a good way to read her works!

Seems to me like Fawkes might be necessary to save Harry's life in book 7. It would help being everything full circle, too. Fawkes saved his life in the Chamber of Secrets when his arm was punctured by Slytherin's basalisk. What is Fawkes is the one that ultimately saves Harry in his final (or one of the final) battles against LV? We could make an argument that LV is much like a snake given his determination, physical appearance, and some of his personality characteristics. Sort of a parallel between books 2 and 7?

Plus, I love the creature... he can't be gone for good. Not yet. shocking.gif

I think the Fawkes went to 12 Grimald place to live in what is now Harry's house through Sirus. I think he will come back in book 7 as a help to harry in some way. I think since Harry is loyal to Dumbledor Fawkes will now be loyal to Harry.

I agree that Fawkes will most likely return and maybe pick a new owner, but it doesn't really have to be Harry. JKR said Harry might get a new pet, but I think she was then just dodging the question, avoiding to say yes/no. Plus, Harry already has a bird, and a hippogriff. That'd be quite a menagerie with Fawkes added to it.
I think Fawkes might either decide to help the Order of the Phoenix, whose flag he already is. In that case he'd most likely pick the new Head of the Order for his new owner - McGonagall I guess.
Or - in the case of good Snape - Fawkes might pick Snape to prove Snape was always loyal to DD. Just a theory, but I like it...

I thought Fawkes left right after dumbledore was killed; in the chapter: "The Phoniex Lament" Harry said that he knew Fawkes had left for good. I think what Harry saw at the funeral was something related to Dumbledore's soul. It could be his patrounus, but JK never said what Dumbledore's patronus is. I think it's Dumbledore's soul escaping.

i think fawks was in dd's tomb, to be beside it's old master, even unto death.
