An idea:
If James was Lily's Secret-Keeper, and Lily was James's, then wouldn't that have bypassed the entire 'who should be the Secret-Keeper?' problem? Then, when little Harry was born, either Lily or James could be his Secret-Keeper, and they would divulge the information to the other parent. Just an idea. -------------------- |

Isn't it just the house that needs a secret keeper? I think it could be either of them - but then we would have had no story!
I suppose they could want anyone who Peter judged trustworthy to be able to reach them. If either of them were the secret keeper they wouldn't be in touch with the outside world and would have no idea how the war was going. Still, that's a pretty bad argument really and to be honest I agree with you. -------------------- And now Harry, let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure - Albus Dumbledore RIP

I bet there's some magical rule that says the secret can only be kept by the same person, and since essentially they would both be keeping the same secret, this would violate that rule.
Also, I'm sure if I wasn't exhausted and it wasn't after midnight, I could think about the logic of it, and if they ran into some sort of Catch-22 whereby it meant that neither of them could divulge the secret to anyone else, because the permission would keep bouncing back and forth. But like I said, I'm sleepy -------------------- "Nobody's ever asked me to a party before, as a friend. Is that why you've dyed your eyebrow? Should I do mine too?"

The problem with Lily being the secret keeper for James and vice versa is that if you aren't very careful you find that no-one can find either of them ever again - as James can't reveal Lily because Lily hasn't revealed him.

Well I guess it could be possible but can a person be a secret keeper for their own house. DD was the secret keeper of the order but the property 12 grimmald place wasn't his, it was Sirius's. But then again we don't know if the house was really James and Lily's...

Ah...I see. So you're saying that: for example, say if James wanted to talk to Sirius...but he can't because Lily hasn't revealed him to Sirius, but she can't because James can't reveal her to Sirius. Makes sense now. This post has been edited by dumbledorefan92: Aug 2 2006, 06:55 PM -------------------- |

Good point roonwit. I was also going to mention that I think it wasn't the house that was being kept secret. Flitwick mentioned that Lord Voldemort himself could press his noise on their sitting room window (or something of that nature) and never find them. That would give the impression that it was the people that are the secret. It would also allow the Potters to leave the house. But I'm not sure how you would keep a secret of a person's location if they are moving constantly.

Exactly what I was trying to say, but much more concise! -------------------- "Nobody's ever asked me to a party before, as a friend. Is that why you've dyed your eyebrow? Should I do mine too?"

But I'm not sure how you would keep a secret of a person's location if they are moving constantly. See this whole how the Potters were hiding debate always gets me riled up... it all comes down to the wording of the Secret. If the wording was something like this: "The location of the Potters is at # whatever Godric's Hollow" then the actual house would be hidden... since it is just like the wording to Grimauld Place Now if the wording was something like this "The Potters are hiding at # whatever Godric's Hollow" You would be able to see the house, but not the Potters within the house because they are the secret, but with this wording, you would be able to see them outside of their house. Now if it was this: "The Potters are in hiding" you wouldnt be able to see them period, anywhere.. so it is up for you to decied what the acutal secret is... I belive it was something like the second one.. that the Potters were Hiding at Godrics Hollow. -------------------- |

It's a good point, but I think the thing was that Lily and James' location was the secret, therefore they themselves could not keep it (wow such a poetic sentence). It was on the house yes, but because James and Lily were hiding there. The magic probably had something to do with that, that someone has to be secret keeper to protect those who are hiding.
With Grimmauld Place it was different, because maybe the Fidelius charm varies for if you are hiding a place or a person. Or uh, here's a really stupid idea: What if the reason Sirius had to stay in Grimmauld Place was because the Fidelius charm was placed on him, and that was the only way they could keep the house hidden? After his death maybe DD found another way, or the charm was placed on Kreacher (or someone else maybe went to live in the house)... well... it's a possibility? -------------------- |
