I was just rereading HBP and I noticed that the rug on the Muggle Prime Minister's floor is an Axminster. I remembered reading the name elsewhere. I went looking for it and found that in GoF, Crouch Sn. says (when he is talking to Mr. Weasley and co. before the Quidditch World Cup about flying carpets) that his grandfather had an Axminster that could seat twelve. What I'm wondering is, is Axminster a brand of flying carpets? And if it is, then what is one doing in the Muggle Prime Minister's office? And is the one in the Muggles PM office one that can actually fly or not? If so, it could have been planted there by wizards for security reasons. What do you peoples think of this?

Axminster is a real make of real carpets and rugs - you can google the internet site and see it yourself. I don't think the carpet in question can fly(this one in the Prime Minister's office).

Well, if it does happen to fly perhaps it's there fore magical evacuation purposes. Say Voldermort finally decides to take ver the world starting with the U.K. He'll take the Prime Minister hostage or kill him or something Vold~ish. The Ministry get's wind of it somehow (phhffff...) and they get to hiom first and fly him out of there on the carpet.

I don't know, that's just my thought on it....^__^

That's what I was thinking too. Just because most Axminsters are not charmed doesn't mean that they all can't fly.

The ministry has already put one precaution that we know of to guard the Muggle PM and that is Kingsley Shacklebolt has been stationed in his office.

I was thinking along those lines, and I agree with Menelve Tiren. Kingsley would be the one to make sure that the Minister is evacuated in case LV attacks the Muggle Ministry. Even if flying carpets are banned, a valuable rug is less odd looking in an office than a broomstick and less likely to be removed.

Maybe you can jinx the carpet to fly? Like go to the store and buy a carpet and jinx it to fly?

Instead of risking the magical world with a Prime Minister flying over the UK on a flying carpet (not to mention the potential target for terrorists, from any decade as we don't know exactly when this story is set...no that's already been done hasn't it, anyway) why not just use floo powder or sidealong apparition.

Good call though. There's no reason why it can't be used as a flying carpet should they need one, and I'm pretty sure it's been there for a while, but no one has tried to remove it (You wouldn't though!!) unlike the portrait.

I like the idea of it being a flying carpet. It may have other charms built into it. If that was the case then it would be hard to follow and track. And it would be a means to get the Prime Minister and his family to safety. Since Kingsley is in the office he would know how to use it. ponder.gif
