Gary Oldman is an extremely versatile and prolific actor, having roles in many movies besides HP. Let everyone know what movies you've seen with him in it, and what you thought of those movies.

The only one I've seen is the cartoon, Quest for Camelot. It is a great movie, and not childish, with Gary Oldman providing the voice of Ruber, the antagonist. This movie deals with many issues. A girl, Kaylee, has to try to achieve her dreams the hard way, after her father is murdered and can no longer provide her with an easy way to become a knight like she wants. This hits really close to home because my father died of leukemia when I was 10. He actually taped this movie for me when I was little, and we'd watch it together. Another issue confronted in this movie are the limitations of blindness. Kaylee's companion and eventual love interest, Garreth, is blind. He wanted to become a knight, but when he became blind he had to live as a hermit. Kaylee and Garreth help each other overcome these things as they work together to save the magic sword, Excalibur, from Ruber. Providing comedy relief is a two-headed dragon. There is also some amazing music in this movie. I highly reccommend it to eveyone, because it is such an incredible mix of humor, fantasy, and overcoming challenges.

Gary Oldman has been called the "Modern Man of 1000 Faces" (Lon Chaney Sr. was the original 1000 faces) due to his fantastic versatility! Many people are surprised to find out he is British after seeing him in, say Batman Begins or The Professional.

My 2 favourite Oldman films are Immortal Beloved--the Beethoven bio-pic--and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Talk about contrasting styles! The first film of his that really got my attention was the biography of British playwright Joe Orton: Prick Up Your Ears.

Oldman fans should definitely check out the pix we have in our immense TLC Image Gallery. I am personally adding more to his albums even as I write this! type.gif

Also, be on the lookout in Leaky's Gallery Forum for an upcoming thread focusing strictly on Gary, after the phenomenal success we've had with our Alan Rickman appreciation thread! toast.gif

A Gary Oldman appreciation thread sounds good to me!

Oldman films I have seen include:

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - the first time I noticed him, he was wonderful as Rosencrantz.
State of Grace, JFK, Dracula, True Romance, Leon, Murder in the First, The Fifth Element, Lost in Space, Air Force One and obviously HP.

He's such a versatile actor. My favourite of his films is definitely Leon as it is one of my favourite films of all time. He is fantastically horrible in it. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is a close second though, and I was hard to please because I'm a huge fan of the play!

Just saw Twinkle Toes in which Gary plays a midget.I wont spoil the movie for those who havent seen it, but although not his usual role still very good. My favorite role he has played is Bram Strokers Dracula.

Gary Oldman is indeed an awesome actor, but this thread would be more at home in Wizarding Wireless Network. May the discussion continue smile.gif

I Highlighted what Films and TV Shows I have seen of him. I think he's an incredibly gifted Actor. I am glad that he is back on board for the Harry Potter films.

A film I play quite a bit is Basquait. I liked his portrayal of Albert Milo. It's an under-rated film, but I still love it.

Hope the list helps refresh people's memory. I also like the fact he doesn't mind being involved in Video Games. I think he realizes that it does reach another audience - and it is still acting.

Cheers,

Sid and Nancy definitely made me fall in love with him as an actor, he'll always be one part Sid, one part Dracula, and one part Sirius to me! (it made me depressed at how old he looked in Batman, he was a good Gordon, but still...... I'm not ready for him to look so old!)

He played Jim Gordon, the police officer who helps Batman. (We have some Batman Begins screencaps up in Gary's album in the Leaky Image Gallery here)

I love Gary Oldman. He's such a great actor, he can play any role and he's great. The first movie that grabbed my attention with him was The Professional. He stole the whole movie for me. From then on I've been a huge fan. biggrin.gif

I love Air Force One. Oldman was fantastic in it. I didn't even recognize him when I first saw/heard him as Sirius; he did such a good job with the accent in Air Force One.

My big complaint with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the use of I believe Brendon Donnison (uncredited voice casting?) speaking for Gary Oldman as Sirius Black in the Fireplace?

If I thought there was anything more lame was to use another Actor to do a few lines instead of getting Gary Oldman. Like it really would have killed Warner Brothers to hire Gary Oldman to go to the sound studio to do a recording session. You could even do it with a portable microphone and recording device - considering they worked the voice into the crackling of the flames.

Nah, lets be cheap about it. Never mind that I think Goblet of Fire is a mess of a film. All of this corner cuttting is showing - and will show over time. I hope in the future when they do a re-release of the Harry Potter films that they have Gary Oldman do the voice for the fireplace. Come on, Warner's - Gary Oldman does his own voice in Video Games!

I know there was a big "huff" that they tried to take Gary Oldman off the Harry Potter films. I get so fed up with Film Studio Greed. They hired one of the most talented Actors, and what do they do? They give him a run-around if he will actually continue to be Sirius Black in the future films? I am intelligent enough to read through the excuses I saw in the press.

Gary Oldman made Prisoner of Azkaban more of a watchable film, then just a serial film you just went to, because you liked the books. As an audience you needed to be convinced he was a cold blooded killer - at first. Then later, you had to accept the fact that you might not have perceived him correctly - that he actually was an incredibly kind man with a rough edge. Gary Oldman has that ability in his acting range to make people scared, and still like him, or love him depending on the role he plays.

I felt he really showed the suffering of a man who had been wrongly committed for years in Azkaban. It looked like he half starved himself for the part - which had me a bit worried. Gary - you can do method as long as you don't ruin your health over it, ok? I'd like to see you in many more roles in the future!
_________________________

I remember how much guff he got for acting in Sid and Nancy. Now it's considered a classic punk film - but back then the critics really ripped into Gary Oldman. If I know of one Actor who has had to deal with a heavy load of negative press - it's Gary Oldman. Over the years he just kept working hard. Sometimes having a majority of critics like his work - and others still give him grief.

I don't pay much attention to critics, otherwise I would never have caught as many Art house movies as I have over the years. I felt let down with Lost in Space because Gary Oldman was trapped into a horribly written film. They still had several versions of how to end it. It was not a well thought out script. He did the best he could with his minimal material. I hate having to see high quality Actors having to work like this.

I just want to see Warner Brother's start to treat Gary Oldman decently. I am sure he has given an amazing performance for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I just don't want Warner Brothers to pull some stupid - NON CREDITED STUNTS on Gary Oldman again in the future.

If he does have a part to play in Harry Potter and the Deathy Hollows - Warner Brothers better get Gary Oldman to play it - even if it's his voice!

Cheers,

Helyx wizard.gif

I hope to find Nil by Mouth by Gary Oldman next time I am in Belgium. They have a FNAC where you can order French DVDs. It's one of the few films I really have wanted to see by him, especially since he wrote the script, and directed it. I only saw a small clip of it in an interview show - but it looked great.

I very vaguely remember him from a few Knot's Landing episodes (I was a faithful Knots fan as a kid), I have Air Firce One and Dracula (though I hate that version). I just got the new Spyro PS2 game for Christmas and unfortunately, Gary's voice (and Elijah Wood's) is the best thing about a rather boring game. Also, Gary was the one singing "My Way" on the radio as Spike sang along and drove out of town in the Buffy the Vampire episode "Lover's Walk"--all the other Buffy fans will know what I'm talking about.

I didn't realize he was in any Friends episodes.

My husband and I couldn't think of who he could be either, so we checked out the gallery. OMG, we were stunned he was Gordon. Just goes to show his range. I'll be on the lookout for some of his other films.

My favorite Oldman film other than HP - Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

I've seen tons of his films. He's actually one of my favourite actors because he's such a great chameleon. Sometimes I don't even recognize him. For example, in PoA, it took me at least 2 minutes to figure out that he was Sirius Black. He looked so different.

I've seen:
State of Grace
Dracula
The Professional
Immortal Beloved
Sid and Nancy (I think this is one of his best films. He was so convincing and absolutely incredible in it.)
The Fifth Element
JFK
Batman Begins
Prick Up Your Ears

Yesterday I watched him in JFK. I never realized he looked so similar to Oswald, but he really does. I haven't seen any of his other movies, but it's just amazing how versitile he is! Not just his voice and the amount of accents he can do, but his look. He always looks so different in each movie.

Wow, I did not know he was Sid in Sid and Nancy. I've never seen it, but I've heard all about it from various people and I've been meaning to but now that I know Gary's in it I suppose I have to see it.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead! What a crazy movie/book. Well, play. Read it anyway.

The likeness is uncanny! But, Oldman is such a chameleon, he could play anyone and make me believe it.

BTW, we have added to our Oldman albums in the TLC Gallery here. We have screencaps up from JFK (1991), and State of Grace (1990). Also, from Oldman's breakthrough role as British playwright Joe Orton, we have screencaps from 1986's Prick Up Your Ears.

He is truly an amazing and versatile actor! clap.gif

True Romance is probably my favorite romance film. It's so amazing. & Gary Oldman's character is hilarious. I love it. He only has a "small" role, but for the 10 minutes of his screentime, I actually believe he -IS- Drexl. He's great.

Not a movie but I want to add that Gary's voice is on the new Spyro A New Beggining PS2 game as is Elijah Woods(Frodo).

I love him in The Scarlet Letter...he makes the movie worth watching!

I also love him in The Fifth Element...he plays the quirkiest character with the strangest accent...but it is perfect...

Oh! All my favourite Gary Oldman movies in one place! My favourite is Rosencrantz and Guldenstern are dead. It was the first time I saw him and he was wonderful as the bumbler ... I then found everything else he'd ever done, and I was so so so happy that he is in HP, 2 of my fave things together biggrin.gif The only one of my real faves you haven't mentioned is Meantime, which is also awesome ... Another with Tim Roth (Guildenstern) as well, and they are both great.

QUOTE(helyx @ Dec 31 2006, 07:18 PM)

I hope to find Nil by Mouth by Gary Oldman next time I am in Belgium. They have a FNAC where you can order French DVDs. It's one of the few films I really have wanted to see by him, especially since he wrote the script, and directed it. I only saw a small clip of it in an interview show - but it looked great.

He isn't in it (so far as I know, I've only seen it once): he wrote and directed it, and it's an awesome film. The guy who plays the lead is brilliant and it's such a dark, gritty, moving film ... biggrin.gif

Sorry for the double post ... I don't know how to double quote in one post blush.gif

The other day I was watching Air Force One again, & I'd forgotten that Gary Oldman stars in that movie. It's too bad that he gets to be the bad guy, but he is great in that character.
I did have the Fifth Element on VHS but it has disapparated. Maybe I'll buy it sometime on DVD. Gary Oldman is truly a versatile actor thumbup.gif

Gary Oldman is one of my favorites. I was so excited when he signed on to HP. Anyway, I have seen: Sid & Nancy, Prick Up Your Ears, The Professional (aka Leon), Bram Stoker's Dracula, Immortal Beloved, The Fifth Element (tho my husband likes it more than I do), Rosencrantz & Gildenstern Are Dead, and there are probably others that I can't remember right now. I think he makes anything he's in instantly more interesting.

OK. Just went to IMDb. I've also seen him in "Batman Begins" and when he was on "Friends". I completely forgot about the Friends episodes!

He was absolutely terrific in Sid and Nancy. That would have to be my favorite Gary film.

You know he once joked he had the record for the most death scenes ... I guess he gets to add another one to that. Bet he's disappointed. So far as I know he signed on before his character waskilled off in the books lol.gif

I haven't seen nearly as many as I'd like. Some of them are astonishingly hard to get hold of.

I've seen ...

Dracula
True Romance
Romeo is Bleeding
The Scarlet Letter
The Fifth Element
Air Force One
Quest for Camelot
Lost in Space
Hannibal
Batman Begins
and that hilarious Friends episode

Many of these I only watched because the impeccable Mr. Oldman was in them! But some of them are on my top-whatever-number movies in their own right. I can, and do, watch Dracula and Air Force One over and over! I can't wait to get hold of the rest of his repertoire. It's a fun goal to have. smile.gif

Lets see: Dracula (awful movie!), Fifth Element, The Scarlet Letter (watched it at school), Air Force One, and a movie I can't remember the title to, where Natalie Portman costars as a troublesome young girl.

That film is Leon, with Jean Reno as the guy looking after the little girl. Air Force One was OK. Haven't seen too many films with Gary Oldman in. Checking his imdb profile and apparently he played Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK

People! seriously! Try to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead if you can. It is hilariously funny. It was the first thing I ever saw him in, and it had me hooked. He's just so sweet in it!!!

So I have to ask the question because this is driving me nuts lol. I've been reading this thread since its beginnings, & keep seeing mention of Batman Begins which I saw one time only as an in-flight movie on those tiny little TV monitor things they have on planes, & I was tired, but I do not remember seeing Gary Oldman. Which character was he in Batman Begins?
Batman is probably my favorite superhero so I might just buy this movie on DVD sometime anyhows smile.gif

I loooooooooove Gary Oldman, he's one of my favorite actors. (As an actor myself, I can only dream of one day being as good as him...)

I think the first movie of his that I saw was Air Force One as a kid, but since then I've seen Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (SO FUNNY and he is amazing-see it!), Sid and Nancy, Immortal Beloved (he is just incredible), Leon: The Professional, The Scarlet Letter, and more I think I'm forgetting.

And he is just AMAZING as Sirius...'nuff said. I just worship him.

"Rosencrantz" is really funny. And I've had a huge crush on Gary Oldman since I saw "Dracula" when I was 14 or 15. I think he's one of the most talented actors working today. I wish he was in more stuff. But he is supposed to be in the Batman sequel that comes out next year.

You guys are cool cool.gif I bought the two-disc DVD set of Batman Begins because of this thread.
Gary Oldman is awesome in this movie, & although for most of it we see him as older, when he first shows up, like when Bruce Wayne's parents are killed, he looks so much like Sirius it's almost shocking. It's a neat movie & I like how Gary Oldman plays the good guy / father figure.

So now I'll be looking out for the sequel next year, I hadnt realized that there's going to be one. Do any you guys know what it's about? lol obviously it's about Batman, but this movie kind of tells a pretty much untold aspect of the Batman story. So is the sequel going to continue in that style or is it going to be a regular superhero movie?

Mentioning nudity... I was thinking , ya know perhaps someone can says if Gary appears nude in some movie. Because now I think Does he appear nude in any movie?
Actually I have seen many movies of HP actors, and never seen Gary doing a nude, even a half-nude.

And including actress conf.gif conf.gif I have seen only Alan Rickman (Ya know, our Snape) doing a total nude scene, and Kenneth Branagh doing nudity on screen.
Does someone else besides Snape and Lockhart do nudity on screen? XD

I now have Immortal Beloved on DVD and quite liked Gary Oldman's performance as Beethoven. It had a strange twist at the end that made you wonder what people really think, especially when it comes to musical creations.

I am also looking around for other Gary Oldman films. I hope to find Sid & Nancy, but a Criterion Version.

Cheers,

Er ... strange thing to wonder unsure.gif but he does a half-nude in Rosencrantz (he has a bath ...) and apparently (tho I don't remember this myself) there's a scene in The Scarlet Letter. But that's all I'm aware of ... oh, sorry, plus there's bare chest in Dracula too smile.gif

I know I've seen him in Dracula, but it totally went passed me that he played Jim Gordon in Batman Begins. Shame on me.
I've also seen Léon, so I saw him there as well.

Yeah, he was an odd dandyfied Dracula wasn't he? With his coloured glasses and all.
I obviously liked the film well enough to buy it though.

edit: And I really really really have to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead now!

'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead' is very good!

I like Shakespeare and I love how so many of the HP actors do Shakespeare. I also like how both Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew have been Rosencrantz on film--Gary in the aforementioned film, and Timothy Spall in Kenneth Branagh (Lockhart!)'s Hamlet. >3

XD

Er ... strange thing to wonder unsure.gif but he does a half-nude in Rosencrantz (he has a bath ...) and apparently (tho I don't remember this myself) there's a scene in The Scarlet Letter. But that's all I'm aware of ... oh, sorry, plus there's bare chest in Dracula too smile.gif

Oh yeah, I just forgot Scarlette Letter, for sure I have seen that movie, indeed it has one erotic scene. If I´m not mistaken he does a topless too there.
I forgot about it.

And I forgot Jason Isaacs topless in Peter Pan biggrin.gif

There's all kinds of Gary Oldman characters here . It's quite funny really.

After Sirius, I think his role as Stansfield in Léon was the best. Phenomenal.

Ive only seen him in Lost in Space and Sid and Nancy(Other than HP of course). Lost in Space isn't particularly noteworthy, I enjoyed it but none of it was particularly memorable. he was very good as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy though ponder.gif I'm sorry to say I haven't seen enough of his performances to attest to his versatility as a preformer but I enjoyed all of his roles that I've viewed to date.

I have to say that my favorite non-HP Gary Oldman movie is Sid and Nancy. His performance in that was amazing, and I'm a big Sex Pistols fan, so it's a happy little package all rolled up.

I also really liked him in both Dracula and The Professional. In my mind, his performance was the only redeeming quality of that bad Dracula remake. Ugh. Both he and Jean Reno were phenomenal in The Professional, though. I haven't seen that one in a while. Might have to watch it again. Natalie Portman was great in that one, too - kind of a foreshadowing of her later career (ignoring the horror that was the Star Wars movies).

There are only a few films I haven't seen Gary Oldman in, because he is my acting hero - a legend, in my eyes. I can't see how he hasn't been more widely recognised, and how he hasn't even been nominated for an Academy award I'll never know.
I haven't managed to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead because it doesn't seem to be available on DVD here in the UK. dry.gif
Errrr, apart from that, I think I've seen everything else! His stand out roles for me have been as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy, Beethoven in Immortal Beloved (which I also can't seem to get on DVD here!!!) and Stansfield in Leon/The Professional.
And to add to that, I've been admiring him even more in the new Batman movies! tongue.gif (especially The Dark Knight -wow!)

True Romance is probably my favorite romance film. It's so amazing. & Gary Oldman's character is hilarious. I love it. He only has a "small" role, but for the 10 minutes of his screentime, I actually believe he -IS- Drexl. He's great.

I have to agree with everything you've said I just this movie again earlier today and it is fantastic! The first time I saw it, it took me a few minutes to realize it was Gary Oldman!

The only Gary Oldman movie I have not seen is Dark Knight. I adore his movies and even thought I thought Sirius should be a bit more dishy and younger, I fell in love with his Sirius from the moment he spat out that very un-canon line at the usually unflappable Alan Rickman.

True Romance is truly Gary having a ball, getting into character and going keeping your company. He's heardly recognizable, but gorgeous.

He's very sweet and funny and vulnerable with Tim Roth in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead --it's a complete departure from the villians he portrays.

*sigh* One day, I might be able to find Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead here in the UK. I've been trawling the internet for a Region 2 copy of the DVD, but to no avail. It's extremely frustrating because I've heard so many good things about it and I haven't seen it yet. At this rate I won't!

Maime the Hunter - I think Gary is wonderful in The Dark Knight. His character, Jim Gordon was given a lot of screen time (especially compared to Batman Begins), and he really had the opportunity to develop his character. There's a scene, almost at the end, where he truly (in my opinion) showed his versatility and reminded me of just why I love watching him on screen. It was a heartbreaking scene.

Nobody laugh, but my dad had to tell me after seeing The Dark Knight that that was Gary as Gordon. I waws like, "That guy who plays Gordon looks familiar." My dad laughed, "That was Gary Oldman. You know Sirius Black." The funny thing is my dad doesn't even watch HP. Also, I didn't like the movie much, but I thought he played a very interseting character in the Fifth Element.

I really liked Gary Oldman in the Fifth Element. He played a rather eccentric, albeit villainous character and he did it so well! He was very quirky too and added a nice touch of comedy to his role! I loved his hair do too wink.gif I look forward to seeing him in "Dark Knight" as well.

Gary is a camelon actor. He just blends into his roles. He's great in The Firm, True Romance, also I'm not really a fan of JFK, but he's great as Oswald. Also he's great as Sid Vicious, in Sid & Nancy.

Aw, you really have to see that movie, it's brilliant. One of my favourite Gary movies, though I love the play too so I guess it makes sense tongue.gif

As for Gary movies I've seen so far:

Air Force One
Batman Begins
Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Contender
The Dark Knight

Dead End For Delia
The Fifth Element
Goblet of Fire
Immortal Beloved
Interstate 60
Leon
Lost in Space
Meantime
Murder in the First
Nil By Mouth
Nobody's Baby
Order of the Phoenix

Prick Up Your Ears
Prisoner of Azkaban
Quest for Camelot
Romeo is Bleeding
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
The Scarlet Letter
Sid and Nancy
Sin

State of Grace
Track 29

Plus the music videos for Love Kills and Since I Don't Have You, and all the ads he's been in.

... I have a problem, lol. The ones in bold are ones I have on DVD, others I borrowed from my uncle, rented or watched online.

Favourite Gary movie of all time is Léon... actually it's my favourite movie of all time full stop! His performance as Stansfield is just amazing though.

Aha, well, since I last posted in this thread in August ohmy.gif I have managed to find a copy of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and Immortal Beloved.

Not only is R&G Are Dead now my favourite Gary Oldman movie ever, but quite possibly my favourite movie as well. It's just pure genius, and he and Tim Roth are a perfect double-act. That scene where they played 'Questions' like a verbal tennis match is an absolute gem.

I'm not familiar with the play, or indeed Hamlet, for that matter, but seeing this movie has made me think about getting over my fear of Shakespeare. tongue.gif

That's one of my 3 favourite movies ever too! I have an interesting copy with interviews with them all on a separate disc, and apparently Tim Roth and Gary Oldman loved it so much they would 'rehearse' the lines of scenes they'd already shot lol.gif

Rosencrantz is such an adorable character, too. he's sweet and bumbling, doesn't know what's going on and yet he has some of the best 'wisdom' of the two of them. And the two characters are so adorable together. Hmmm, methinks it's time to pull it out to watch again.

Yeah, I love the way they have Rosencrantz, who Guildenstern ignores because he finds him childish and stupid, making loads of little discoveries in the field of physics. That's not in the original play, Stoppard just decided to put it in because the film had more oppertunity to be a lot more visual than the play itself.

My brother played Guildenstern in a production of it during the summer so I read Rosencrantz' lines with him loads tongue.gif It's brilliantly written. Especially the questions scene! Tis even longer in the play.

And woo for getting to see it! What d'you think of Immortal Beloved?

Oh, and speaking of Gary and Tim being the perfect duo, has anyone else seen Meantime? It's odd watching the two of them at the very beginning of their film careers, before people knew who they were.

Yes, I was lucky enough to get the extra disc with all the interviews as well, and it was hilarious when they talked about rehearsing their fave scenes when they'd already done them, lol!

I love Rosencrantz's speech on death, and when he questions at what point do we realise when we are going to die. For all his bumbling (lol, that's a great word, Harry's Horntail) he's probably the most intelligent of the duo - after all, he did invent the hamburger and discover gravity tongue.gif

Stansfield, I liked Immortal Beloved very much - Beethoven is my favourite composer anyway, and it was also the first film that introduced me to Gary - I've obsessed over admired him ever since.

I haven't seen Meantime - that's on my list of 'Gary Oldman Films To See' tongue.gif

Yes that's a fantastic movie. I've heard, not sure how true it is, that the director used to create his movies by getting the actors to improvise a lot. So they had their basic characters and story but a lot of the dialogue was created by themselves. I saw that movie after I saw them both in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and I was so amazed by how different the characters were. It was a complete change, with Gary being the dominant nastier one and Tim Roth being the little sweetie, not that Gui8ldenstern is nasty really. He just gets frustrated with Rosencrantz a lot, and doesn't recognise his good traits.

Well judging by Tim Roth's interview on the DVD I'd say the improvisation thing is true. I suppose it makes it more natural.

I've seen the batman movies, harry potter (obviously), JFK (you forget and actor is playing Lee Harvey Oswald), Air Force One, Sid and Nancy (cool performance and a great nonglamorous movie surrounded with love and addiction), and Leon. That's all I could think of.
