I wanted to start this topic. Since I discovered only recently with Buffy, the Vampire Slayer a great storyline of Willow and Tara. I thought it was incredibly well written for lesbian characters. At times I watched this show for the Willow and Tara, more than I did for the main characters.

So I thought people could point out gay characters in Film or TV they thought were worth noticing.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

What are some decent Gay Themed Films or TV Series you could recommend?

What characters do you feel changed the way people thought about Gays & Lesbians?

Did you ever feel a TV Show or Film was just too GAY?

Did you think it showed an honest depliction of Gay life?

How have you felt with Gays & Lesbians being made serial killers, or they get killed as part of the storyline?

What roles do you think empowered Lesbians and Gays to make a better image of their identity?

Are you irritated by the old standard Drag scenes in TV's and Films? Do you think this also degrades women? How do women see Drag in characters?

When Gay oriented films were nominated for film awards - did this make you go see the Films?

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I thought this would be a good notice board for episode people see involving a gay storyline, or a gay character.

My own frustration with any Gay TV or Film is that I think Lesbians get better scripts. So I will usually go to a Lesbian Film over a Gay one. I am also fed up with all the gay men in drag within Films. I wish the writers would not resort to some cheap tackics that they think will amuse an audience. Not all gays like drag. So I am more thrilled when there is an episode that does show a more honest approach to Gay Life.

Try to list the title of the episode, or information so people can find out more about what you are talking about. Thanks!

Cheers,

TV:

Torchwood: Episode 7: Greeks Bearing Gifts. It featured a lesbian theme, and I thought the show handled it well.

Torchwood/Doctor Who Crossovers:
I also like the character of Captain Jack Harkness, who is bi-sexual. I think John Barrowman makes the episodes in Torchwood, and Doctor Who unique. It's just hinted at him liking both types. I just don't remember which episode Captain Jack kisses Doctor Who.

Will & Grace. I watch it only for Megan Mullallly as Karen Walker. I hope that she will get her own show in the future. No one knows how to insult people like Karen Walker. The other characters tend to be tooooooooo gay for me. I know Karen Walker is not gay in the series, but it the reason why I watch the show.

Little Britain. I find the show quite funny. I think the whole "I am the only gay in the entire village" to be right on the mark. For some reason I don't get so annoyed with the drag in this series. It's the same with Monty Python's Flying Circus, which I watched when I was quite young.

TV Mini-Series:

BBC:Tipping the Velvet. Geoffrey Sax. (2002)
BBC: Fingersmith. Aisling Walsh. (2005)

Both are based off the writing of Sarah Walters.

In Tipping the Velvet I thought it showed in some ways what lesbians go through until they get the life they really want.

I also liked Fingersmith, because of the great plot twist in the series. Also Fingersmith had an understated role of a gay man in it as well, that I did not quite figure out like I normally would.

The most I know about the making of Tipping the Velvet (2009) as a film is that it is in some form of working script at the moment.

Film:

Brokeback Mountain. Ang Lee (2005) I saw the film on DVD. It just was not a film I wanted to see in the cinemas. People told me it was long. It took me three times of trying to watch it without falling asleep. I still would have prefered the real ending, instead of the easy Hollywood trick -
He might have been smashed by a truck wheel, instead of just admited that some people beat him to death.
I still thought Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack Twist and Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar were great in their roles. I just would never be able to watch it again without falling asleep.

---------------------------------------------

TransAmerica. Duncan Kirk. (2005) I saw this in the film theaters. I went to see Felicity Huffman as Bree. I thought she did an amazing Acting role in playing a trans-gendered individual. I did not think the film pulled any cheap punches about it. I thought Felicity gave the role a more humane aspect, that many transgender films do not honestly portray.

----------------------------------------------

DVD Hellbent. Paul Etheredge-Ouzts. (2004). I did get this stupid horror DVD. The film production is so bad it looks like a low budget gay porno. I felt they used this technique just to get the gays to buy it, instead of making a real film. I felt they just used all the stereotypes in the gay community.

The only thing I did like was that the soundtrack was different than other Gay Films. Nick Name was great with the stage music in one of the Halloween Gay Clubs in the film. I also liked a certain plot twist which I won't reveal it. This film was too gay rainbow flag for me.

-----------------------------------------------

Far from Heaven. Todd Haynes. (2002). I did like Jullian Moore as Cathy Whitaker. I thought it was bold of Dennis Quaid as Frank Whitaker to play the character of a man who is trying to figure out what his sexuality is. I thought the film handled the subject well. What a women goes through when they find out their husband is gay. It's devastating because the woman just feels she is to blame for it when that is not the case. I also have seen another film by Todd Haynes - Velvet Goldmine (1998) which has some very gay elements in it.

------------------------------------------------

The Hours. Stephen Daldry. (2002). I thought Meryl Streep as Clarissa Vaughan showed a harder side in being a lesbian. When Ed Harris as Richard Brown
jumps out the window because he just can't take suffering with AIDS
anymore - that whole scene just wrecked me for a few days.
I thought the film did a good job in translating the book by Michael Cunningham.

Megan Mullally has her own talk show now! I love when she sings with some of her guests, the great Tony Bennett among them. I had no idea she was such a good singer!

Seems like it would be a good idea to mention Ellen DeGeneres here. Her sitcom was great, but after the infamous "coming out" episode in 1997, ratings sunk and Ellen was canceled. I never really understood why. Maybe shows with openly gay characters have to work twice as hard to stay on the air, especially ten years ago when the whole thing was a bit more shocking. I'm just glad to see her back with such a wonderful talk show - she's SO funny.

I remember watching Xena:Warrior Princess as a kid and being shocked, but secretly pleased, by Xena and Gabrielle's relationship.

I just finished season one of the HBO series: ROME

Servilia of the Junii played by Lindsay Duncan
Octavia of the Julii played by Kerry Condon

I know that in Roman times they had a different moral code. So both of these characters still like men, but I think they have an interesting Lesbian relationship. I haven't seen season two yet - so I don't know if Servilia is just using Octavia, or if she really loves her.

Still, I think it's interesting to note as a Lesbian relationship. Keep in mind the show is adulted themed, with some nudity and physical scenes.

Cheers,

BBC: Torchwood. Season One - Episode 12 Captain Jack Harkness.
It's not everyday you see a character get to kiss the man (Matt Rippy as Captain Jack Harkness) whose identity his is now using to cover his real identity.

I thought Torchwood did it in a tastefull way to show two men kissing in the middle of a 1941 ball. It's better than many of the TV series kisses I have seen over the years with two men.

I wasn't sure if the Captain was gay at first, but through the episode - you see the future Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) is noticing something about him.

I am surprised at many of the new shows on TV not having an issue with two men or two women kissing. So maybe someday I will like some series that has a gay storyline for a change.
Cheers,
