haha, this is really curious now. could Jo possibly be such a good nitpicker of fine mythological details?
check this out:
QUOTE

The antique Romans called him(the basilisk) "regulus" or little king, not only because of his crown, but because he terrorized all other creatures with his deadly look and poison.
During the first century AD, many travelers crossing the deserts of North Africa used to take with them cockerels as a protection against Basilisk. Strangely, a new type of Basilisk appears which had the head of a ---- instead of that of a reptile. It was first called a Basil ---- and later a Cockatrice or Cockatrix. Its birth is very curious. It has to be born from a shell-less egg, which is laid by a seven-old-year ---- during the period when Sirius the Dog Star can be seen in the sky. A toad or snake on a dung heap must then hatch the spherical egg. The cockatrice that emerges from the egg has eyes that resemble those of a toad but still retains their basilisk mortal stare. To the medieval Christians it represented sin and sudden death

so, i'm not surprise that sirius' animagus is a dog, then. and the fact that Regulus is Sirius' younger brother. that being said, could Regulus be an animagus too then...maybe a snake??
One more thing, Regulus is also a star in the sky, and is supposed to mark the beginning of the summer solstice, hence the name "watcher of the North".Early English astrologers made Regulus a portent of glory, riches, and power to all born under its influence. Proclus wrote: "The Lyon's heart is called of some men, the Royal Star, for they that are born under it, are thought to have a royal nativity." anyway, thats just extra stuff i found interesting. but what i said earlier could explain why in the world she would choose the name Regulus for Sirius' brother.
comments? ideas? waiting to hear what you guys think?

Merry: I don't know why he's so upset. It's only a couple of carrots.
Pippin: And some cabbages. And then those three bags of potatoes we lifted last week, and, and, the mushrooms, the week before.
Merry: Yes, Pippin, my point is, he's clearly overreacting. Run!
