In HBP, we're introduced to the other side of Tom Riddle's family--the Gaunts--Grampa Marvolo, Uncle Morfin, and Mommy Dearest Merope. Lounge staffers have once again teamed up and provided some names for you to consider. Do you agree, or are there other actors you would prefer to see portray these characters? Be sure to share why you vote the way you do!

Great ideas!!!! I had an especially tough time deciding on Marvolo, but ultimately picked Jeremy Irons. He just makes such a fantastic villain, and is SO versatile!!! I picked Hugh Laurie for a much more shallow reason... I think SeverineSnape would have my head if I kept her from seeing him even once. ;) And, for the last, I only really know one of those actresses. I suppose it may have been more helpful if I had looked the others up, LOL.

If you have seen The Magdalene Sisters, there's absolutely NO competition: Eileen Walsh is absolutely PERFECT for Merope.

Okay, I'm a sucker for Anthony Hopkins--he is SO versatile, so I voted for him. I googled the others and decided to vote for Rhys Ifans for Morfin, because he has a history of doing well with psycho people. I really like Rachel Weisz's (love interest in the Mummy movies) fascial expresssions, so I think she could portray Merope quite well.

I think Bill Nighy should play Marvolo. I think he would do an excellent job. As for Morfin and Merope, I think they should go with unknowns or relative unknowns, especially for Merope. All the choices listed are too recognizable to buy any one of them as an inbred, not so pretty, witch.

" [Rupert] really has made [Malachy] his own. He's just such a fine film actor. He's very subtle and expressive." - Daragh Carville, screenwriter of Cherrybomb

I love Robert Carlyle - I think he'd be amazing as Morfin. And I agree about Eileen Walsh.

Sorry to mention it, but didn't Charlotte Coleman pass away in 2001? If she was still with us though, I think she could have done a great job.

I agree Eileen Walsh really is by far the best choice for Merope.

I was really torn between Jeremy Irons and Anthony Hopkins for Marvolo. I ended up choosing Hopkins, but really would like to see either one of them do it.

and Rhys Ifans for Morfin. His build may be a bit taller and thinner than I'd pictured for Morfin, but he really does do the psycho thing very well.

For Marvolo, I said Anthony Hopkins. He is such a brilliant actor, and he did a good job with Hannibal Lector. I think the creepy look he has in The Silence of the Lambs plus the hair he has in The Mask of Zorro would be a perfect combo. For Morfin I said Robert Carlyle, and for Merope I said Rachel Weisz. I think that Rachel is too pretty to play Merope, though.

i went for JIrons, R.Carlyse and R.Weisz smile.gif why? because the Gaunt should be an attractive looking pure blood family though became destitute. a certain haughtiness these actors can depict. R.Weisz after Constant Gardener proved she can be vulnerable which movie watchers connected. K.Winslet is perfect too but personally prefer R.Weisz whom i've been a fan since Chain Reaction with K.Reeves lol.gif

If more people had seen Eileen Walsh's work in The Magdalene Sisters, she'd be number one.
