For many reasons the film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one of the most-anticipated film releases in recent memory. This is partially due, in no small measure, to the fact of the film having it's release date moved back a full eight months to ensure the company will have a "sure-hit" for 2009. Next year will be marked with a paucity of new movies due to the writers' strike of 2007. As the penultimate tale in Harry's saga, it is also a film which promises dazzling special effects, romance, intrigue, and the loss of one of the most important characters in the series.
As usual, faced with the task of paring-down one of Jo Rowling's massive and intricately-wrought stories, much had to be cut. There will be no visit to the Gaunts through Bob Ogden's memory, for example. In fact, it would seem that we will probably only see two visits to the pensive-past: young Tom Riddle at the orphanage meeting Dumbledore, and a teen-aged Tom Riddle asking Professor Slughorn about horcruxes. Do you think the film adaptation will suffer due to only seeing these two memories? Which other pensieve-excursion do you think SHOULD have been left in the film, and why? And yet, the filmmakers giveth, as well as taketh-away! How do you feel about added non-canon scenes in the films? In spite of being such a dark tale, HBP is also a very funny book! The filmmakers have tried to keep this sense of wit and fun, since it is one of the hallmarks of Jo's writing. One sub-plot of the story that will no doubt account for many of the laughs in the film is the pairing, albeit temporary, of Ron and Lavender Brown. Do you think the filmmakers adequately showcase the inherent humour of the books? What LOL scenes from HBP are you HOPING to see on the silver screen? The Potter films are HUGE effects films, and much of the work that has been done on them has helped advance the science and art of film effects in general. To enhance the impact of the effects in the IMAX ultra-huge screen format (70mm film--extreme hi-def) there will be 3-D scenes as well, as was done in the OotP film. Doubtless the cave scene will be the highlight of this. What other special effects from HBP are you looking forward to? Have a look at the HBP trailers in the TLC Video Gallery to get a taste of what will eventually end up on the big screen. You can also find HBP stills and screencaps of the trailers here in the Image Gallery. Then tell us what you are anticipating and even fearing for this sixth Harry Potter film. Do you think the film adaptation will suffer due to only seeing these two memories? Which other pensieve-excursion do you think SHOULD have been left in the film, and why? When I read the book for the first time, I thought it would be difficult to translate this to film. There is so much exposition, way too much for a movie. The pensieve scenes illustrate how Dumbledore worked out the conclusions he made about Voldemort. The memories need to be condensed. As interesting as the Gaunt memories are: Dumbledore already retrieved the ring from the shack. So we really don't need to know where the ring came from. The locket ends up to be in Umbridge's possession, so we don't really need to follow its trace. We really don't need to know how Voldemort was able to blame the murder of the Riddles on Morfin. The memories also have clues of what the horcruxes possibly are, but not where. That's, I believe, is why there are only two memories in the film. How do you feel about added non-canon scenes in the films? I'm fine with this. While at Hogwarts, Harry is in relative safety, because of Dumbledore. That's why Voldemort wants to get rid of Dumbledore first. But outside Hogwarts, it's different. The burrow attack illustrates that wherever Harry goes, people around him are in danger. The burrow attack happens when Harry and Ginny are about to kiss. At this point, Harry was probably ready to engage in a relationship with her. However, after the attack he's more reluctant. Harry and Ginny don't get together after they kiss in the Room of Requirement. There's no need for a break up scene. That's at least what I get from the test screening reports. Do you think the filmmakers adequately showcase the inherent humour of the books? What LOL scenes from HBP are you HOPING to see on the silver screen? When I first saw the international teaser trailer, I laughed out loud. If the humor is handled the same way as the scene at the end of the teaser, I'm not worried. Slughorn's Christmas party was one of the funniest parts in the books, which is in the film. I hope they do it justice. Ron's dealings with Lavender should also be a great source of humor. At least he learns what he doesn't want in a relationship. What other special effects from HBP are you looking forward to? Side-along-apparition sounds cool. I'm looking forward to Quidditch in winter. And there's of course the cave scene... |

Well, after seeing the first trailer, I was very happy. At that point I expected the film to be very much like the book, and I was happy for that. However, as time went on I heard ridiculus things like: THE BURROW IS BEING BURNED DOWN!!?!?!? What!? As if this book wasn't good enough! Arg.. that made me mad! I am fearful that they will have too much romance. I know this is the most romantic book in the series BUT this book is supposed to be dark and evil! I am excited for Quidditch though. After I saw the second trailer I had about 1 million thoughts ruuning through my head:
First, I was about to die of excitment. 2. I thought Michael Gambon acted more like Dumbledore 3. I still was not happy with the Burrow being burnt down 4. I was happy they showed the lighter side of the book, the first trailer was very dark 5. I was happy to see some Quidditch 6. I love hearing Harry say "FIGHT ME COWARD!" yay! 7. I loved Dumbledore's burnt hand 8. I loved Dumbledore's "every week, every hour, this very minute in fact, dark forces are trying to penetrate these walls" it showed some darkness 9. What was with Harry running through the leaves? I didn't get that. And then there was some random shot of Bellatrix- is she in the Burrow scene? 10. I know the ending had nothing to do with the book, and usually I would have been very mad about the Harry/Hermione/Romilda (was the Romilda Vane?) scene, BUT I COULDN'T HELP LAUGHING! IT WAS HILARIOUS! -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

When I read the book for the first time, I thought it would be difficult to translate this to film. My thoughts were the complete opposite. This book to me looked like it was perfect for filming; the right amount of content that could be pared down without sacrificing too much of the key plot, the humour, the dialogue, and some of the sequences scream "blockbuster". I cannot wait for this film. The memories, although short, look really good (the casting of Tom has just been so good!). The humour looks on par, the effects largely look realistic (I'm not sure about that lightening in the International Teaser), and the actors are getting better in leaps and bounds. Oh, it's going to be amazing (I hope!) All I can say is: surely it's July already, right? If we all close our eyes and wish really, really hard... then we'll get to July. Oh, I can't wait! -------------------- Signature in development... thanks to Procrastinators United! It should come tomorrow...

Sorry, if I didn't make myself clear, but I was referring to the memories and how they would translate to film. |

Sadly, I can't feel excited for this film. I wish I could but I can't. My enthusiasm has just dropped completely. Each film has been good yes, but have missed something that I can't put my finger on. I'm not sure they have really captured what Harry is about. So much so that it was months after it came out before I bought OotP on DVD and since then I've watched it... oh twice maybe? And the fact that they pushed the HBP release back merely to increase their already swollen profits is certain proof to me that they don't care about giving us a film that we're happy with, they just want our money. That's all they care about. I seriously considered boycotting the cinema release. I don't think I will, I'm too addicted to Potter to sit by while it's on the cinema and not go and see it. I trully hope that they will change my mind with this film I really do. I hate not really caring about something Harry Potter-ish, it's not like me but sadly that's how it is. Maybe closer to the day I will feel better about the film but the fact that, if things had not changed, I would be watching HBP this month does not really encourage me.
