So I thought it would be a good idea if we had a thread where we could compare/discuss/remember all the teaser and theatrical trailers for the Harry Potter series. When the Half Blood Prince teaser came out not too long ago, I was reminded of all of my previous experiences counting down the seconds to those few short clips of never-before-seen HP footage. Sometimes its hard to keep those memories straight after you've eventually seen the movie, so every once in awhile, I like to take a look at them to remind myself. And now we have a thread where we can share all those trailer-watching experiences - so let's all put them in the pensieve! Oh and a BIG thanks to the mods on this one, you guys rock. Some questions to start off with: Which trailer most accurately depicted the movie? Prisoner of Azkaban, the full length theatrical, for me. It was darker, edgier, moodier and the third movie ended up being all those things. It was the definitive turning point of the franchise and that was the exact feeling I had when I first watched this. I knew my role in the fandom was going to change after seeing this preview. I just knew I would love this movie! Which trailer made you want to see the movie? Which ones disappointed you? The one that got me most hyped up for the movie was the Goblet of Fire theatrical. We'd seen so many pictures even before the trailers came out, but everything I saw made me feel really positive about the adaptation. Plus, it was clear that the movie was going to be romantic, which, true to the book, the series really hadn't been thus far. The music was what really got me, though. It's funny, because most of it was not heard in the actual movie. Although the final score kept the trailer's atmospheric quality, it was not quite as beautiful or heart-pounding. I don't know what happened to this music, but I wish it had been in the film somewhere. It's kind of gorgeous and really makes me feel something. Order of the Phoenix, the teaser, was a disappointment. It was my own fault, I was sooo hyped up for this movie because I was such a fan of David Yates' tv work. But the trailer made me really nervous. I couldn't believe they gave away the kiss! And the movie just, didn't look as exciting as I'd hoped. Of course, I still was excited, but I sort of had to check myself after that. The movie clearly wasn't going to be what I had thought, what I had expected...and it ended up being just that, but still, one of my favorites. Did you go to a theater to see it premiere or just watch it online? I've seen a few of the trailers in theaters, but the only one I went to see in a theater the day it premiered: the Order of the Phoenix teaser in front of Happy Feet. I went to an 11am show down in Manhattan (I was living in Jersey at the time) and there were about 10 people in the audience. Two other HP fans and a bunch of mothers and children. As I said before, I was disappointed, but it was still exciting and totally worth ten bucks. Like pretty much the entire fandom, I waited online for the Half Blood Prince Trailer and squuueeeed when it showed up a few minutes early (or a few months late depending on your perspective). I was disappointed that I never caught it in theaters, I really do enjoy seeing them on the big screen. But there just weren't any WB movies I particularly wanted to see. Think back to when you first saw the trailers. How did you feel? Well, my absolute favorite was the Goblet of Fire teaser, and it sent chills down my spine. I couldn't contain myself! The age progression, I will admit, made me cry a little. I also have to admit that the thing I was most excited about was the boy's hair, I just thought everyone looked so grown-up and beautiful and generally speaking, I thought that boded well for the series. This was also the trailer I used to wake up in the morning and watch. Every day. And then at work. And then after work and before bed. I don't remember how I felt when I saw the Sorcerer's Stone trailers, but I do get really nostalgic when I watch them now. Especially after Deathly Hallows came out. The quick fade outs as Hagrid and Harry go down Diagon Alley, shots of Ollivander's, its all so much more significant now. And of course when I first watched the HBP teaser, I felt more excited for that movie that I had managed to be in many months. It was such a frustrating time for the fandom and that little glimmer of hope just totally revitalized it. We all know what happened, but still, when I go back and see that Young Tom Riddle, I get really excited over the idea of sitting in that theater and feeling those goosebumps again. I still love to watch this trailer on my cell and I've made quite a few people watch it as well. Even people who clearly aren't fans have said number 6 looks like a winner. Well that's enough of me, what do you guys think?? Considering that we have yet to see the full HBP theatrical trailer, this may be jumping the gun a bit.
As far as the full theatrical trailers are concerned, hands-down my favourite was GoF (I got goosebumps when the Durmstrang ship's prow broke the surface of the Black Lake *brr*)! Very close to that would be either OotP or PS/SS (which will always have a special place in my heart being the first.) I watch the trailers obssesively and even have them downloaded to my iPod (thanks to the Video Gallery for that! BTW, the weakest trailers were for the third film, imho. They were very confusing and did little to pique the audience's interest. This may be partly why PoA was the least successful HP film so far. This was really interesting for me. Coming to the Potterverse late, just last year in fact, after the release of DH and the OotP movie, I had never seen the first 5 trailers, at least not since getting interested in HP. So they were all a bit new for me. HBP is my favorite teaser, just because it's my first that I've had the pleasure of getting excited about.
My favorite theatrical trailer (having just watched them) is a toss up between GoF and OotP. That is interesting because GoF is my least favorite of the movies so far, but the trailer gives just enough to get you hyped up for the hugeness (is that a word?) of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. The OotP one though, seems very true to the movie and with the footage it shows from the Ministry, it gives a glimpse of how truly exciting the movie would be. Thanks for this thread - it was great seeing all the trailers! -------------------- ![]() *heart, mind, soul avi by {{voldy}}* |

I think HBP teaser trailer is the best so far-but maybe that is just because I am caught up in the moment and in the excitement. I also really liked the PoA teaster and theatrical trailers-but then at the point the film was released, PoA was my favourtie book, so maybe that explains why I enjoyed it more than the others? I loved the PS trailers, because I was so excited about the film adaptation, and watched them about 50 times a day!

Oh the teaser trailer for GoF still gives me chills and almost makes me want to cry at the montage of each of the trio growing up, the music is so beautiful and sentimental ... oh, I just want to hug them all. That's generally my sentiment towards Ron & Harry, I just want to protect them from everything.

It was really quite creeping me out! The boy who plays Tom Riddle looks good. I guess I'll be hiding behind a pillow when I watch the film! -------------------- Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titilandus

Does anyone know when the full length HBP trailer comes out? well I'm not going to hold my breathe like I did for the teaser! I'm betting it will either come out with the Xmas day releases, and if not that, I wouldn't be surprised if we had to wait until march/april. but maybe that's just my lack of faith talking. -------------------- queering potter updated 10/27

The Sorcerers Stone Trailers are really great, because it's the first time we see the magical world of Harry Potter. I've only seen them on DVD's though. They're done really well and it's nostalgic with the closing line "The magic begins soon" When ever it's on a DVD I make sure to watch it.
The trailer for Chamber of Secrets looks like a "Previously on Harry Potter" synopsis. I like the Prisoner of Azkaban trailer, the scene with Harry shouting "Expecto Patronum" is a strong one to put in the trailer. The Goblet of Fire trailer is the one I saw the most and it was so great. It made you feel like you just had to see the movie. The Order of the Phoenix trailer has a different feel to it from all the others, from the start it feels more like a horror/chiller/thriller. You really get the idea that things are changing in the magical world of Harry Potter and there's a more sinister overtone now. -------------------- Colonel Jack O'Neill: So what's your impression of Alar?
Teal'c: That he is concealing something. Colonel Jack O'Neill: Like what? Teal'c: I am unsure. He is concealing it. |
