I was rereading book six the other day when it mentioned something i had forgotten: Hannah Abbott's mother being killed.  Was this just a random killing, as the terror surrounding Lord Voldemort's rise was mounting, or was it put there specifically by JK Rowling as some kind of clue? is there anything important we don't know about Hannah? any thoughts??

This is what the Lexicon has to say about Hannah:

Hannah Abbott

But really, I think it was just a way to show that the war is really on now.  It's not like it was in OotP, all kind of hushed up and in the dark.  It's open warfare, and people get killed, unfortunately.

I think it was just a way to show that those around Harry were being affected. The parents of his classmates were dying. JKR just didn't make it anyone super close to him. Hannah Abbott is a name we've heard since Book 1, but she's never gotten a lot of exposition. And I think it's also to point out that it's not just people in power that are getting killed. It's very random and scary.

I don't think it was a hint to anything special about Hannah Abbott. It was just a way of showing that a war is going on. JKR carries this theme further when she shows the effects of the war - which is really all she does in that book - by having Ron say "Anybody else we know died?" repeatedly.
You can't show the entire terror and horror of war - and actually, like every terror and horror, it wears off after a while. So you have to show examples of it. And this is just what JKR does repeatedly through the book - this being one of those instances.

Yep it's used more as a fear factor that it can be anyone, not just the important characters get killed but also the bystanders and innocents.

I think that it was partly the awareness factor and partly the fear factor, like Montymort and ONCE mentioned. It showed how friends of Harry's were affected by the war and Voldemort being back. It was also to show fear because now the war is fully in swing, and there is no knowing who is going to die next. You always have to be on your guard.
