Harry and the Cloud of Witnesses
By Amy Austin-Taggart

Abstract:
In Chapter 34 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry is walking towards his death at the hands of Voldemort. Faltering in his strength, he calls forward the living memories of his mother, Lily; his father, James; godfather, Sirius; and teacher, Lupin to aid him in his final act. This idea recalls the theological concept of the cloud of witnesses from the book of Hebrews from the Bible. This paper will compare and contrast these ideas.

Biography:
I am a Christian Educator whose specialty is finding modern media(movies, books and TV) to illustrate theological ideas. I was introduced to the Harry Potter books when my then 11 year old daughter wanted to read them. We would read together, and then would discuss what was in the books. We together found the Leaky Cauldron website and especially love the fan art area. I have begun teaching parenting classes by using the Harry Potter books and movies to talk about ethical situations with children.

I enjoyed your essay. I think it is a universal human trait to be inspired by the example of others. Sometimes those who inspire turn out to be corrupt, twisted or plain evil eg Grindelwald.

What a beautiful and moving essay! It was a great pleasure to read.

"The cloud of witnesses" is indeed a poignant reminder that those who have gone before us are always with us. The theological angle which you compared to the Forest Chapter of DH was fascinating. I particularly liked the way you emphasized Harry's realization of the faults of James, Sirius, Remus and Lily, recognizing that their faults made their sacrifices all the more meaningful. Well done! I'll read that chapter differently from now on!

Your essay is powerful and beautiful! As a member of my church's women's group, I am often reminded of that "cloud of witnesses". As a HP fan, I find that you have put into words, what I have not yet been able to--just why Harry Potter is so meaningful. I am delighted to see that you are using HP to reach parents and young people. Best of luck in that endeavor!
