Harry and the Cloud of Witnesses
By Amy Austin-Taggart Abstract: In Chapter 34 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry is walking towards his death at the hands of Voldemort. Faltering in his strength, he calls forward the living memories of his mother, Lily; his father, James; godfather, Sirius; and teacher, Lupin to aid him in his final act. This idea recalls the theological concept of the cloud of witnesses from the book of Hebrews from the Bible. This paper will compare and contrast these ideas. Biography: I am a Christian Educator whose specialty is finding modern media(movies, books and TV) to illustrate theological ideas. I was introduced to the Harry Potter books when my then 11 year old daughter wanted to read them. We would read together, and then would discuss what was in the books. We together found the Leaky Cauldron website and especially love the fan art area. I have begun teaching parenting classes by using the Harry Potter books and movies to talk about ethical situations with children. This essay may be read here.
