After reading the book and seeing peoples reactions to their relationship just based off this book, I can't help but feel strange about the publics view on their relationship before Deathly Hallows and the way their relationship worked in the story.
This book is basically the first one where Harry is seriously interested in Ginny in a relationship way. The thing is that it goes from secret crush, to random kiss in common room, to random blurbs in the last 200 pages, and then him ending the relationship at the end of the book. Their relationship didn't seem to be that well developed, but by the end of the book it's like they love each other. Obviously they have always cared for each other, but it does feel rushed to me. Especially because you only have one or two specfic moments where Harry and Ginny have relationship moments. I don't get why people got so attached to this couple before the last book. Ron and Hermoine had their moments throughout the series, but Harry and Ginny had little moments mentioned in the book between them that showed a strong connection. Do you think JK should have devoted more to building up their relationship and do you think fans jumped over it too fast? |

QUOTE Do you think JK should have devoted more to building up their relationship and do you think fans jumped over it too fast? No, I don't think so. The relationship between Harry and Ginny is peripheral to the story, and in my mind serves as a further reinforcement of the "love will overcome" sentiments throughout the series. Harry needs to find the meaning of true love before setting out to destroy the ultimate evil. I appreciated that this didn't become a main focus of the story in the final books and become a teen romance which would have diluted the other themes too much. In respect to the timeframe, I think it's also important to remember these are 15/16 year olds, who lack the impulse control and reserve that adults possess. Harry finally realised he had feelings for Ginny and pondered them, but without dealing with the issues causing his hesitation (ie Ron) his emotions took over and he went for it. Despite it being a new relationship, they had known each other for 5 years, and were comfortable with each other, so I didn't find it that much of a stretch that they found love in one another in a short space of time. I think that if more time had been spent focussing on and developing their relationship throughout HBP I would have found it tedious and painful. -------------------- ![]() |

The relationship was developed the way it should of been, I didn't want the final book to be about Ginny when the previous 6 had not much to do with her. (I'm not refering to Chamber of Secrets where she was)

I think their relationship developed perfectly. Harry has always been fond of Ginny, he considered her a sister. But they had been through a lot together, with going to the Department of Mysteries etc. He only realised how fond he was of Ginny, when she started to withdraw a little, and date other boys. I don't think it was rushed at all

I was never saying that JK should devote loads of time to the two of them, but it was kinda silly IMO.
She dates Dean for half a book, then Harry randomly kisses her, they have one moment after that together (the tattoo joke), and then the breakup. If I would have skipped a page I would have never known they were dating lol. I like how JK approaches relationships in that it isnt the focus of the book, but I just dont get why people thought they were such a great couple when she barely mentions them doing anything together and when she mentions Harry she talks about how he cant see her. I just think that maybe she should have tossed Ginny into some of the "big threes" adventures in HBP some more. Make her feel more involved on what's going on. I mean, I dont really care just wanted to toss this thought out there. This post has been edited by MattG711: Jul 8 2009, 01:27 AM |

For me, reading HBP first time, Harry and Ginny's relationship felt rushed and I wouldn't been at all surprised, if either Ginny or Harry would have died in DH or found a new love. And before I read HBP first time, I had read previous books several times and I have after DH read all series from last to first and first to last. Still, I think Harry and Ginny's relationship is rushed. Books are written from Harry's perspective and although already in first book Ginny has a crush on Harry, its just a puppy love and it seems Ginny's grown and forgotten. Ron has his ideas who's the chosen one for his sister, but that's a very subtle hint. For me, there's as much chemistry between professor McGonagall and Harry |

I understand what you mean by it feeling rushed. But the books main focus isn't really how much time Harry and Ginny spend together. I'm sure they spent a lot of time together, both before he realized how he felt about her and after when they were together, it's just not mentioned because then we'd have to read even bigger books lol. It's kind of like having to put in that Harry went to the bathroom during Charms or something, it'd take up too much time to go in to such minute detail. Harry and Ginny hung out at the Burrow, played Quidditch, ate together and etc prior to HBP, especially as she grew up and got over her puppy love crush, but it's not explicitly mentioned. And then at school they had Quidditch and all the other stuff you do with your friends at school.
When I read HBP I saw it more as when you fall for your best friend or something; you don't really know when it happened, but suddenly there it is staring you in the face, all these new feelings and stuff. -------------------- "The money was the very last thing I expected because I was just very used to being quite broke. I don't think the Harry/Ginny relationship was rushed. It was on the cards from COS, especially when Harry rescued Ginny from Tom Riddle.
Harry needed time to get over Cho Chang, before he was in a position to take an interest in Ginny. And she has been there all the time. The bit I found annoying was all those scruples about how Ron would think. Frankly, who cares? It wasn't as if he planned to marry Ron. -------------------- |
