I'm considering attending Portus 2008 next year in Dallas. This will be the first real or big HP conference for me.
I attended a mini book party/conference for DH and was a little disappointed. Now I am looking for any leaky members that would share their good and bad experiences to possibly help me make a educated guest on whether I want to spend the time and money. Let's discuss what you liked, what could have been improved, and your ideal conference would sound like, and if you are to attend Portus 2008. **Thanks NickTLC for your suggestion!!** This post has been edited by Tx Highlife: Aug 9 2007, 04:35 PM -------------------- ![]() |

Colorado is boring...apparently. I'm still really hoping to go to Portus next year by saving up a bunch of money and begging my mom. awww I can't believe more people aren't posting on this topic
when I heard about Portus and I live in Dallas I was jumping off the walls with the thought of cosplaying as Bill 'cos I think I'll make a great Bill :] But back on the subject... I think it'd be amazing to be able to go to a conference and converse with hundreds of other HP fans so even though it's expensive what true blue HP fan would pass up the opportunity?! -------------------- ![]() |

I suppose I should go to this thing, seeing as it's a <1 hr drive from me. I think I'd have more fun helping out and/or hanging out with whoever else from TLC drops by than the conference itself.

I was in the EXACT same ship as you, Tx Highlife before deciding to go to Prophecy. Was it going to be like a drawn-out release party with really nerdy people in costume everywhere who are too into themselves for me to even talk to? Would anyone be normal? Would I have anyone to hang out with? What would I DO for 5 days straight??
It turned out to be no problem at all. Almost everyone is normal. There are definitely crazies who are REALLY into themselves, but you just don't hang out with them :-D My situation was a little different than yours - I didn't know anyone when I signed up for Prophecy, but I had just joined staff, which opened a lot of possibilities for me in terms of who I'd hang out with the whole time, since the Leaky Staff tend to stick together. We'll welcome anyone to hang out with us, of course, like The Azkaban Dietician and a few others did at Prophecy, so don't be scared... Just like any social group, you just have to be yourself, be aware of social cues, and go with the flow! If you have problems making new friends quickly, then going to a conference might not be the best thing. What I did was find out who else was going, and tried to get to know them as best I could online - get some AIM screennames and talk to them outside of Leaky, so that I'd know I would mesh, socially. It's easier if you're 21 or over, because there tends to be some social drinking at these conferences. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions! I know how nervous I was when I signed up for Prophecy, but it ended up being one of the best experiences in my life, and I have 30 incredibly cool friends because of it. -------------------- ![]() |
