This is not meant to be a depressing thread, I just wanted to put it out there. (Yes, I know it's not an original thought).

Being now almost 6 months gone from the release of DH, I begin to wonder about the actual lasting power of the series. I know during all the high times and hullabaloo the popular consensus among most fans was that these books were here to stay. We all felt that these would become part of the lexicon of children's literature along with Dahl, Bloom, Potter (Beatrice); and many even felt they'd sit alongside Tolkien and Dickens as well.

Now that we're past the point of revelation, I wonder, is it all over but the shoutin'?

I, for one, think Harry Potter is dead. There is still enough money to be made that the hype machine will keep rolling on, at least past the point of the final DVD release. He's dead though. I think HP, as a work of literature, will fade to the point of being simply answers to trivia questions. The legacy of the fandom, particularly the ways in which the fansites were leveraged by the publishers and studios, will endure as a template for other works.

That's Harry Potter's legacy, as a phenomena, not as a work of literature.

I think that Harry Potter is a form of Star Trek of the Fantasy World. It will attract new generations of readers as time passes, because it has this great relation to education. People see the characters going to school, working hard at studies, as the readers are also doing in their real lives.

I think the Harry Potter series set a new quality standard for writing youth literature, so new novels and stories are written with a more realistic take, instead of just talking down to people.

Harry Potter is going to be around for a very long time. It gave many people their first real cultural chance to look at British School life. I have been impressed that Warner Brothers made sure it was a British Film Production, which has opened the doors to other British Productions that now receive higher budgets to produce Films and TV shows. Harry Potter showed the High Quality ability of Actors, British Craftsmanship and Design, so people just don't think of Britain as the BBC, Masterpiece Theater, or some wickedly sharp Comedy shows - they now see Britain as a World market leader in Media Entertainment, and Cultural Arts.

It's not dead. I see it in Holland with many of the Children's Author's here still get read by new generations, even though many of the stories are outdated by the time frame they were written in. Youth Literature is a great way to pass down Cultural Traditions. It opens people up to other Literature that has themes similiar to the Magical world of Harry Potter.

People thought Walt Disney wouldn't make it - and now look where he is at. Osamu Tezuka is finally getting the recognition he deserves from the many years of Mangas he created from his own pen. J.K.Rowlings is one of those rare people who give humanity a remarkable way to relate to the past, present, and future through her literature she created.
