This is not meant to be a depressing thread, I just wanted to put it out there. (Yes, I know it's not an original thought).

Being now almost 6 months gone from the release of DH, I begin to wonder about the actual lasting power of the series. I know during all the high times and hullabaloo the popular consensus among most fans was that these books were here to stay. We all felt that these would become part of the lexicon of children's literature along with Dahl, Bloom, Potter (Beatrice); and many even felt they'd sit alongside Tolkien and Dickens as well.

Now that we're past the point of revelation, I wonder, is it all over but the shoutin'?

I, for one, think Harry Potter is dead. There is still enough money to be made that the hype machine will keep rolling on, at least past the point of the final DVD release. He's dead though. I think HP, as a work of literature, will fade to the point of being simply answers to trivia questions. The legacy of the fandom, particularly the ways in which the fansites were leveraged by the publishers and studios, will endure as a template for other works.

That's Harry Potter's legacy, as a phenomena, not as a work of literature.

I would disagree because there are so many new readers, of all ages, who have yet to be introduced to the world of Harry Potter. There are two children on my block who have just started the first book. Their older siblings encouraged them to read as soon as they were old enough. I think Harry Potter, like other great literature, will be passed on generation by generation.
My niece just asked to read SS and she loves it so much that her husband wants to read it. My son read all the books, under threat of death by me, and he's addicted as is his wife and they cannot wait for my 15 month old grandson to be old enough to read them too. read.gif
So I think there will always be Harry Potter. biggrin.gif

I totally agree. My nieces are just shy of 4 months and I read Harry Potter to them. They may not understand the story, but one day they will and I think they will enjoy it thoroughly. I can't wait to have my own kids so I can read the books to them. I am on my my umpteenth million reread of the books, this being my first reread of the entire series. I read DH twice before I started to reread the series because I needed time for it to sink in and really read it that 2nd time. Not just speed through it like I did the 1st to see what was going to happen. I was in my mid twenties when I started reading Harry Potter, yet if we went by an accurate timeline of the books Harry and I would be the same age, and for the first time in a long time I was excited to read again. I used to love it as a child and teenager, but nothing had gotten me excited like this in along time and I think that feeling will be a lasting effect for generations to come. The story itself is a truely good story and when something is truely good it's worth a read no matter how old it gets.

I disagree as well if shows like Dark Shadows, Battlestar Galatica, Star Trek and Dr. Who can perservere for years after their intial start I think HP will be just fine. HP will only die if no one ever again reads it and I find that hard to believe or imagine. There is still a Lord of the Rings fandom even after the movies came out, HP may "die down" or go quiet but I don't think it will ever really die. Especially given the testimony of several people on podcasts stating how HP is being studied in schools.

I couldn't disagree more. The books are over, sure, but dead? To quote the tag line from my cousin's memorial hockey tournament..."You are never truly gone until you are forgotten."

Well, we're here, aren't we?

I think that Harry Potter is a form of Star Trek of the Fantasy World. It will attract new generations of readers as time passes, because it has this great relation to education. People see the characters going to school, working hard at studies, as the readers are also doing in their real lives.

I think the Harry Potter series set a new quality standard for writing youth literature, so new novels and stories are written with a more realistic take, instead of just talking down to people.

Harry Potter is going to be around for a very long time. It gave many people their first real cultural chance to look at British School life. I have been impressed that Warner Brothers made sure it was a British Film Production, which has opened the doors to other British Productions that now receive higher budgets to produce Films and TV shows. Harry Potter showed the High Quality ability of Actors, British Craftsmanship and Design, so people just don't think of Britain as the BBC, Masterpiece Theater, or some wickedly sharp Comedy shows - they now see Britain as a World market leader in Media Entertainment, and Cultural Arts.

It's not dead. I see it in Holland with many of the Children's Author's here still get read by new generations, even though many of the stories are outdated by the time frame they were written in. Youth Literature is a great way to pass down Cultural Traditions. It opens people up to other Literature that has themes similiar to the Magical world of Harry Potter.

People thought Walt Disney wouldn't make it - and now look where he is at. Osamu Tezuka is finally getting the recognition he deserves from the many years of Mangas he created from his own pen. J.K.Rowlings is one of those rare people who give humanity a remarkable way to relate to the past, present, and future through her literature she created.

If Harry Potter is dead, why are we still here in the Leaky Lounge? We are here because Harry is alive in our hearts and our reading.

Is Harry Potter great literature? (there is a thread on this in Flourish and Blotts). We won't know that for another fifty or so years. Shakespeare and Dickens were the "crowd pleasers" of their day. Their works are now considered literature!

Is Harry Potter a phenomenon? Well, yes, but it's popularity was spread by word of mouth long before the hype set in.

My 15 month-old granddaughter has had Harry Potter read to her since she was in the womb. I think that Harry is here to stay.

Not to be rude, but here is my answer: Never!

I am sure you have your reasons to believe that Harry Potter will fade away, I have mine to believe the opposite. Time will tell, but I am sure of one thing, I won't let it die. biggrin.gif
