A good friend of mine is having her first child in July.  For her baby shower gift I offered to decorate her babies room.  (Something I have done for several friends). When I asked her to pick a theme for her room, she went with Harry Potter. I was very excited because my classroom is done in HP, I think it would make a great babies room.

I have a few ideas, but I was wondering if anyone else has a Harry themed child's room, or if anyone has any ideas?

Thanks,

Darcey

This really isn't a bedroom, though it may work as one.  My son's 4th birthday is today and it is HP themed, but also a quidditch theme with Gryffindor colors. I can just picture a baby's mobile made of golden snitches laugh.gif

I'm not actually a parent, but I like the idea of a painting of Hogwarts on the wall and trim that has pictures of owls on it. And a big wooden trunk like the ones they would use at Hogwarts, to store blankets and things in. I do like the idea of the snitch mobile though. Ooh! and a squishy red armchair tongue.gif !

Go in the Cauldron Shop, there's a thread about all sorts of ideas for rooms/costumes/everything.  I just came back from there and it looks awesome! biggrin.gif

I've thought about borrowing an overhead projector from the church and projecting images on my daughter's bedroom wall.  Then I could outline them and paint the pictures with acrylic paint.  I think this would work for any theme.

Yes, I've seen that in designer shows (Trading Spaces, While You were Out, etc.).  I suppose the only problem there (for me at least) would be a real lack of talent! :headdesk:

There's nice "celestial" bedding patterns out there with moons and stars...and those stick-on glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling would be good.

I love the snitch mobile...little stuffed owls would also be cute.  Of course, you could go all out and make one featuring a nice badger, eagle, snake and lion!  I made my baby's mobile with simple stuffed animals made out of colorful felt with rolly-eyes.  I just attached them to an existing wind-up musical mobile.

You would definitely need to hang a banner...even if it didn't have the Hogwarts' crest on it and was just a simple banner split into 4 color quadrants with an H in the middle. (Felt!  Fusible webbing and felt.)

I don't know if I'd do all four walls...but do at least one wall with soft sponged stonework to make it castle-like!  That would be a good wall to show off the banner.

A stuffed Dragon would be cool.  What if you did the 4 Dragons as pillows?  How about making a Dragon slipcover for a kid-sized beanbag chair? It could have a soft head and tail.  (That seems familiar...They might even have something like that out there...Land of Nod?)   Since Goblet of Fire is coming out this year, you have to include Dragons somewhere--at least a cute coloring book picture or a kid-painting of one framed! biggrin.gif

How about valances with 4 small swallow-tail banner shapes in each house color - red. green. blue and yellow lined up side by side over a rod. (Again...I'd use felt.  Cheap, bright, and no sewing.)

My kid suggested a paper lantern that looked like a lightning bolt.  (That's another thing I swear I've seen somewhere.)

In the first movie, there was a scene with the 1 year old Harry Potter in his cot, he had a really cool witches on broomsticks mobile above the cot.

The important thing to remember is the age of the child - nothing that could cause nigtmares

This is something that would perhaps be slightly out of place in a nursery, but a couple of years ago my grandmother made me a Harry Potter noteboard by taking a large square plank of wood and covering it with an HP fabric, then criss-crossing ribbon across it tightly. She cut out stars and snitches and pasted them onto the flat-head thumbtacks, and put those where the ribbons intersected. It's a really cool board, I love it ^^

Also, you can buy house banners fairly cheaply online, those are really fun. Going with the previous fabric idea, making some HP pillows for perhaps the mother's rocking chair would be fairly simple too, just a matter of buying HP fabric, stuffing, and doing a few quick motions with a sewing machine.
