I know that some parents and grandparents don't approve of Harry Potter, but do yours and why?
Now I have just started reading HBP. Don't laugh Now don't get me wrong. I got it opening day (For 16.99, mind you), but since then my dad has confiscated it and held it for that time. He claims it is because my room is messy, but is it really? Thoughts please!!! Bertie -------------------- Ravenclaw rules!

Well...both my mom and dad are are gone, but I'm positive my mom would not only have approved, but she would have been just as voracious a Harry Potter fan as anyone else here. She loved to read and she was probably why I love to read. There were always bookshelves filled with books when I was growing up, and I never had to sneak a book under the covers with a flashlight at night. My dad wasn't as big a reader, but he never kept me from reading, even if I was grounded or sent to my room for one reason or another. I've tried to keep the attitude of both my parents with regards to my own children. As long as they're reading SOMETHING, I don't have a problem with it.
As for your dad's reason for confiscating the book...WAS your room messy? It seems to me that since he has now let you read it, that may actually be the reason. If it was because he thought it was inappropriate, he would (probably) still have it put away somewhere. Then again, maybe he thought it was inappropriate, then found some info that changed his mind. Why not just sit down and talk to him about it? People shouldn't be afraid to talk to their parents about things, although I know it's difficult. -------------------- You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice

My parents don't read it. But they don't have a problem with it really.
My mum watched POA and I enjoyed answering all her questions but she wasn't overly impresses and I can't convince her to read it so... -------------------- "I am alone the villain of the earth"

The thing is, Maxx,
Its not my book that I'm reading. I took it out of the Library! My dad still has my copy in his room, as well as my M rated video games, my Gameboy SP, my DVD Player... Bertie -------------------- Ravenclaw rules!

Yeah it seems hes keeping things that "are a bad influence"
I agree that you should sit down and have a talk with him. There seems to be other reasons here. -------------------- "I am alone the villain of the earth"

My parents would never even think of taking away my Harry Potter books...I'd probably die. They have taken away some of my books for a few hours to stop me from reading, for a few hours at least.
My mom doesn't have a problem with my obvious addiction, though I do try hard to hide it. She has even read one of the books, and enjoys going to see the movies. My father, though, well, he thinks I am insane, that much is obvious, and considers them "dumb books". Much to my annoyance. Thought I can say he has read half of GoF, only because I took to reading it to him when he was on the computer and I wanted it. Maybe thats why he got me my own computer?! -------------------- "There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness." -Nietzche

My mom thinks its wierd that I am a big fan, but I think she knows how much it means to me and that if it wasnt for Harry Potter I would be depressed (seriously since I started reading Harry Potter I have been taken off my meds).
She also knows (and I am sure likes) the fact that I am reading the books on ym own, no one was like you should read this book or anything I picked up Goblet Of Fire (my mom bought me years 1-5 for ym birthday) after watching Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban. -------------------- "Now, Harry you must know all about Muggles, tell me, what exactly is the function of a rubber duck?" yeah, my parents are huge fans, but the rest of my family (cousings, aunts, uncles, grandparents), except for a select few, think that harry potter is "the devil"
so our parents make me hide all my hp stuff when they come visit -------------------- "I enjoyed the meetings, too. It was like having friends."

For the most part, I think my family is indifferent. (Notice the I think, I'm still not sure if one of my grandmothers thinks HP is wrong; she always gets a funny look on her face when ever I read it when she's around.) My dad enjoys the books because when I was in 6th grade I made him read them to me after I read them as a way to get him to read them. He's not that big of a fan though, he can wait several years before picking up the latest book (it took till the month before HBP came out for him to read OOTP and he never finished GOF). My sisters have read parts of the book, one hated it and has read the first 15 pages of each book, one likes it the first time she reads it and the first time only, and my youngest sister hasn't completed the series yet but she's only in 5th grade so she'll learn.
