On the other side of the subject, the influences that led to Harry Potter, I have two suggestions.
The Dune series, by Frank Herbert, is no longer discussed very widely. Read it again, or for the first time, looking for items that resemble our favorite magical world. References are EVERYWHERE. More obviously, the One Ring that Rules them All, from the Lord of the Rings, is the origin of Horcruxes. Sauron survives after his spirit is separated from his physical body (by Isildur), because Sauron's essence is contained in the One Ring. |

Okay-maybe I have just noticed these more since i have become SOoooo interested, but i have found A LOT (keep in mind I read mostly YA lit as I teach high school) but here are a few I have noticed_i've tried to sort of keep track of these in making my argument about Harry Potter becoming a fixture of modern culture and literature when it is trashed by my more "stodgy" collegues-
sophie kinsella, the undomestic godess author who was mentioned orignally here, references harry in almost all of her books, and I have read most of her books (she also writes under the name madeline wickham, and i haven't read those yet) but she includes watching harry potter the shopaholic" series, reading harry potter in "remember me?..." I really like her stuff and most of her books have some sort of Harry Potter reference. Harry Potter is the required reading the in the book Rash by Pete Hautman and the book is talked about several times, it is about a futuristic safe society and the books have been altered to be "safer" in My Most Excellent Year, the main character is freaked out by a young kid who he decides is "not Harry Potter" in the book Audrey, Wait her friends tease the character Audrey about someone not being a Death Eater and she jokes with them about being Harry Potter geeks. It's been a while since I have read the Princess Diaries, but I think some of Meg Cabot's other books may have a harry Potter reference or two because she writes about being a fan on her web site. these are just some of the most recent ones I've read... Mr. Weasley was looking around. He loved everything to do with Muggles.... |
