In the HP series; we see the Unforgivable Curses used mainly by the bad guys; however; they were also used by the good guys as well.
In DH, do Harry and Minerva McGonagall sink to the level of DEs by using the Unforgivable Curses - Crucio and Imperio respectively? Admittedly, it was used not on innocent people, but DEs, and you fight fire with fire. But can it also be said that they were stooping down to DE level by doing so; did they? Or were their actions warranted? What was it that made Harry use the Cruciatus curse against Amycus? Was it the the desperate situation he was in, the idea that his beloved Hogwarts was in the hands of beasts like the Carrows, the grave insult to a person whom Harry held in vast respect and affection, and everything that had happened to Harry over the past few months coming together with the hatred he felt for the DEs in general and Voldemort in particular? What else could he have done? What about McGonagall's Imperio? Did she really need to use it? Wouldn't another well-placed Stupefy like Luna's, have sufficed? Or was she demonstrating the fact that just because good wizards and witches don't use dark magic, doesn't mean they can't? In DH, Lupin reprimands Harry for using the Expelliarmus against Stan Shunpike; and that essentially it was time for executing heavier artillery. Was Lupin justified when he gave Harry this advice? Do you believe Lupin was encouraging Harry to use the Unforgivable Curses and was this warranted given the fact that it was wartime? Please feel free to pour your thoughts out (Many, many thanks to rowena r and Pleione for their help with the ideas set forth in this thread; to those Moderators who contributed as well, and to the posters who inspired this topic -------------------- ![]() |
