Just finished Heart Shaped Box, by Joe Hill. Stephen King had plugged it on his website, and his recommendations are usually good, so I checked it out. Very fun. The lead character has read all the same novels I have and has the intuitive sense of how you can and can't deal with the supernatural, and rules out many of the common "mistakes" that plague protagonists in those novels.
Turns out that Joe Hill is really Joe Hill King, Stephen's son! (He's the spitting image of his dad in the author photo.) What a lovely debut for the son of the master! Tight, scary, honors the debt to the dad and goes a few steps further in places as well. Great verisimilitude with the details of the famous ex-addict hero without stripmining his dad's personal history, and thanks "my parents" in the acknowledgments. Very gracefully done. |
