Reading The Two Towers who did you think was the most heroic hero and who was the most villainous villain? What made them stand out above the others for you? If I've missed out your favourite please post and tell us who they are and why you choose them.

I chose Sam as the greatest hero in The Two Towers. Despite his grief at Frodo's (apparent) death and his fear of the task ahead and his innate humility, he takes the Ring and resolves to complete the quest, alone. That took tremendous courage.

I chose Saruman as the greatest villain. He betrayed not only the good guys, but also Sauron, in trying to obtain the Ring for himself. He wantonly destroyed anything and anyone in his way. He employed orcs and even bred his own. Even in defeat, he never stopped scheming. In book 1, he displayed scorn for Gandalf (and Radagast) but after the fall of Isengard he doesn't hesitate to try to flatter and seduce Gandalf to his way of thinking. And he has the nerve to try to characterize his attack on Rohan as some kind of misunderstanding. Sauron never pretends he is anything but a conqueror; Saruman is the worst kind of two-faced evil weasel.

I goofed and got Sauron and Saruman backwards...oops...lol

I actually agree with you 100% Val Halla...even though I voted before I read your comments.

Sam seemed the most courageous to me. Especially because Tolkien writes him almost as part of the 'servant class', yet he then allows his courage to win the day. I think this depiction of Sam really dates the books in a way, but it can also be seen as a depiction of former class structures. The 'servant' aspect is more noticeable in the books I think, because of him always calling Frodo "Mr. Frodo" and Frodo accepting that as proper.

I also thought Saruman was the worse one because of his duplicity.

Ditto and ditto!

The Two Towers sees Sam's character come into its own. Despite his obvious love for Frodo, he becomes more than just a servant and companion in this novel.

Saruman is a wonderful character, more sly and cunning than Sauron. He is the worst kind of dictator: one who will try and use clever words to excuse genocide.

Ditto and ditto also blush.gif Sam and Saruman are about as opposite characters as it's possible to get (but, so awesomely well-written that neither are charicatures of the cheesy hero, or evil mustach-twirling villain) Sam rises above everything to strive to achieve something in a totally selfless aim, to do something for others & for good, where as Saruman uses everyone & everything as necessary, in order to be totally selfish, in the hopes of getting the Ring entirely for himself.
I was tempted to vote Shelob as villain lol ... but Saruman's even nastier than a giant spider shocking.gif

I know that Sam did a very great job, and he deserves the vote for the best heroe, but I am too much fascinated by Faramir wub.gif to let escape the oportunity

The worst villain is claerly Sauruman, because he confunds people Slytherin-like using all his cunnings and all kind of beeings to archive his ends.
