I think Thestrals are alive (they eat... Zombie Hippogriffs wouldn't have to eat I wouldn't think) I really do not have much more proof than that but I would think that Hippogriffs would have to be transfigured before becoming a Thestral because the Thestral isn't death or dead they just represent death for those who have seen it... I agree though that it is an interesting idea. Something I would have never thought of.
