I'll be honest, I had never really thought about the love lives of any of the professors. But I suppose that Brymorg has a point about instant travel. A married teacher could just nip back home, now, couldn't they?

Phineas Nigellus Black was a teacher and later headmaster and he was married and had 5 children, so it is possible. (My current pet theory is that he taught DADA until he was replaced by Merrythought in 1895 when he became headmaster. I don't know if he was head of Slytherin while he was teaching or if he was just a teacher.) And of course at least 3 of the founders had children - Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

I don't know about celibacy (the thought of any of the Hogwarts staff getting... frisky... freaks me out.) But I think in a way most of the teachers at Hogwarts are married. Not in the traditional sense, but - well, I don't know how to phrase it but I see Snape as being married to his love for Lily and his vow to protect her son; Dumbledore married to the cause of defeating Riddle; McGonnagal married to Hogwarts and her loyalty to Dumbledore; Trelawney was married to her sherry.
In a way, they all made vows to the school, to each other, to Harry and to defeating Voldemort. And, um, sherry. So, no - I don't think any of the main teachers and Hogwarts were married. -------------------- "Fine," snapped Mrs. Weasley. "Go naked. And, Harry, make sure you get a picture of him [Ron]. Ummm somewher in my mail-box I have the rules a teacher should apply by back in the early 20th century and ebfore, I think it would be rather cool to psot it so when I find it I'll translate it and do so... But teachers weren't allowed to date or even be married.

I find this subject very interesting.
We know that some Hogwarts staff in the past and in the future marry. Therefore i do not believe that celibacy is a requirment to teach at Hogwarts. What we dont know is this: are the teachers we see at Hogwarts during Harry's years married, have been married is so do they have any children? I'm well intrigued anybody know how we can email JKR and find out? I remember from an old interview with JK she said that in the seventh book a certain teacher's spouse would play a big part in book seven. obviously, that plot was scrapped.

Well, it's obvious that Lockhart, Moody, Snape, Lupin, Quirrel and Slughorn weren't married as teachers (and only Lupin married later). There's still the possibility that McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick and Umbridge could be married though. Though they all seem to have so many responsibilities that it's unlikely. Could you even imagaine a little Umbridge?

Just had a thought, imagine the scene, Harry talking to Prof MsGonagall just before the battle for Hogwarts,
Harry: OK we need to set up some defence for the school McGonagal Reply: OK we need some reinforcements i'll just contact my husband, with that Macgonagals patronus disappears out of the window. Harry stares open mouthed: Your married??? MG reply : Yes for over 50years, i've got three grown up children. Crikey wouldnt that have been great! It's been suggested also in current threads before this one, that with wizards having a longer life-span than Muggles, it is perhaps more possible for wizards to dedicate more completely, one period of their lives to marriage / family, and another period to career / vocation. An additional thought, to which that one might lead: in view of wizard-kind being longer-lived, are their marriages required contractually, to be lifelong? I think that we saw the answer to this question in DH - Bill and Fleur were "bonded for life". On the topic of celibacy/chastity, I can actually see an argument for *discouraging* this. If we assume that most Hogwarts profs are gifted witches/wizards (at least more so than the average), why should anyone want to lose those genes from the (already pretty small) wizarding gene pool? -------------------- "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." ~ Albus Dumbledore (J.K. If McGonagall is married, there's always floo powder and what not to travel to where her husband is or was (if she's widowed). The same for Neville. But wow, that staff really IS dysfunctional huh? LOL
