Location: in space, the final frontier . . .

As we get closer to the final disclosure, your UDH mods thought you might enjoy this list of ideas from discussions about the horcruxes complied by member AmberD in the pages and pages of earlier discussions about horcruxes.

This first one is about Where they might be.

Possible locations of horcruxes:

A. Riddle house:
1. Arguments for: He committed his first murder here
2. Arguments against: He wouldn't like the place much because he hated his father

B. Borgin & Burkes - because he used to work there

C. Orphanage
1. Arguments for:
a. Voldemort was born there and his mother died there
b. It is where his suspicions that he was special were confirmed (where he found out he is a wizard)
c. The orphanage is where he began to control his powers
2. Arguments against: He may consider it a sign of weakness

D. In the mountains with Giants
1. Arguments for:
a. Earth element
b. Giants are on Voldemort’s side
c. Gift to the Gurg
2. Arguments against:
a. Giants attack each other (giant’s head w/helmet gift from DD at bottom of lake), therefore gift/Horcrux could be accidentally destroyed in fighting over it

E. Hogwarts (trophy room, chamber of secrets, graveyard, RoR, owlery, Hufflepuff room)
1. Arguments for:
a. The only place Voldemort ever felt at home
b. Tiara in the RoR – It seems quite likely that LV would have found out about the RoR, after all he found the Chamber of Secrets. I'm sure he had plenty of time to discover many of Hogwart's secrets, while at school; 7 years
c. Cup in the trophy room maybe
d. It's hard to find hidden residual magic in a place of magic and lies.
e. Maybe each founder created a secret room, like the CoS. Perhaps Ravenclaw’s was the RoR, she was responsible for the changing floorplan, so it would be reasonable to assume that she knew of every room in the main parts of the castle (I am thinking that the CoS wouldn’t count b/c it is only accessible through the pipes), so she would have to know about the room, and so could very well have created it.
f. Along the same lines, it has been theorized that Hufflepuff’s room would be around the greenhouses. To deduce the possibility of this location, someone researched the badger, and here were their conclusions (whoever did the research, if you remind me of who you are I’ll credit you properly):
They were a protected species in England and they lived all over the place. However, badgers are found in a range of habitats but are scarce or absent in areas of very high altitude and lowland which are too wet or liable to flooding. They favor areas where deciduous woodland, grassland, and arable land are in close proximity to each other. They are a heavy set animal that like to dig and come out at night to eat.
So,
Woodland=forbidden forest
Arable land=land that can be farmed or cultivated which could be Mrs. Sprout's garden patch Thus it was deduced that if Hufflepuff had a room it would have to be in the vicinity of the forest and the veggie patch. Harry, on his way to Hagrid's, goes past Sprout's green house and bump's into Slughorn.

All to closely connected to be coincidence? If this were the case, then LV he wouldn't have needed free reign of the school for long, just a little while. Imagine this scenario he goes to ask for the job from DD and then happens to walk past the greenhouse to say hi to one of his favorite teachers, he was a teacher's pet, it would be as simple as walking in and out, chatting up the teacher then the teacher leaving for a few minutes to attend to something or him erasing their memory. Plus if its closer to the forbidden forest then that’s pretty much unprotected could just go in during the night. Not to mention he would have thought about the place where he'd hide it and the spells before he got there.
g. Another suggestion for the location of a Hufflepuff room is that it is accessed through the kitchens. The kitchens are where cups are kept, and her object is a cup, so why not. The hall to the kitchens also leads to the Hufflepuff common room curiously enough, and is directly under the great hall, making it a sublevel, which is in the ground, and the corresponding element for Hufflepuff is the earth. So maybe the passage leading to the supposed Hufflepuff room is in the kitchens and leads to an earthen sort of room elsewhere under or near the school.
2. Arguments against:
a. Too obvious
b. Lack of access once LV graduated, unless he was using the Vanishing Cabinet, which he might have discovered while working at Borgin and Burke’s

F. Azkaban
1. Arguments for:
a. This is where Morfin’s body is buried
b. We haven’t seen the place really
c. The chances of anyone finding a Horcrux at Azkaban is very small as who in their right mind would go to Azkaban if they could possibly avoid it. And hence it is a perfect hiding spot (until the dementors abandoned it that is)
d. Dementors are on LV’s side and were the last time he was in power as well
e. Dementors would be a very good security measure and would be more than happy to suck the soul out of anyone attempting to remove the Horcrux

G. Godrics Hollow
1. Arguments for:
a. It is called Godirc’s hollow, Griffindor’s first name is Godric
b. This is where he intended to kill Harry
c. Left one where he found it, in the rubble of the Gaunt house, so why not the rubble of Harry’s house?
d. This is where Harry feels drawn to visit at the end of HBP. “I’ve just got a feeling I need to go there.”, p. 651
2. Arguments against:
a. Voldemort was destroyed while there
b. If he was going to use Harry’s murder to make the final horcrux then he may have been intending to leave it there, but he failed, so wouldn’t have left that one there, would he have brought one that was already made there to leave it, doubtful. Whatever he brought to make into a Horcrux from Harry’s death could still be there

H. Durmstrang
1. Arguments for:
a. One of his DE’s was the headmaster
b. Why would they all be so close to home when he had traveled so much
2. Arguments against:
a. None at the moment

I. Stuff based on elements: (left out the corresponding objects since there is so much debate)
1. Water – West (Slytherin)
a. Locket found in water, may have been west, we don’t know
2. Fire – South (Gryffindor)
a. If a Gryffindor relic was used it may (some speculate) be hidden in the fireplace of the DADA class room, hence the jinx of not being able to keep a teacher for more than a year, or may be hidden somewhere associated with fire in the south (its hotter in the south, just kidding)
3. Air – East (Ravenclaw)
a. Ravenclaw relic may have be protected with some sort of noxious gas in the east
b. As to the Ravenclaw horcrux being hidden in air, maybe it is hidden like the chain that connected to the boat was hidden. Literally in thin air, but invisible, and all you have to do is know where to find it and then reach out and grab it. Also, I wonder if accio horcrux would work to get them, since when Harry said it in the cave it was not really a horcrux that he was calling, but a fake.
4. Earth – North (Hufflepuff)
a. Hufflepuff relic may be hidden in the earth, somewhere in the north

J. The Forbidden Forest - not discussed much

K. Someplace related to Dumbledore - hometown, old home, etc...

L. A Grave:
1. In Tom Riddle Sr.’s Grave – He would be proud of that grave because he put his father there.
2. Merope’s grave
3. One of the things that characters in some folk tale hide their souls in is an egg. Interestingly enough, a grave, tomb, casket, or sepulcher are all symbolically represented as an egg

M. The Albanian forest where Voldemort hid for a while
1. There is a custom in Albanian folklore where to ward off evil you nail a snake to your front door. We see this practiced by the gaunt family. This could have been a custom handed down through generations of Slytheryn’s showing that Salazar came from Albania and that is why Tom /LV spent so much time in Albania....to learn more about his roots (there is no evidence from the books that Slytherin was from Albania, but still a very interesting possibility. Anyone know if there are any fens in Albania?)

N. The countryside where LV went with the orphanage

O. Gringotts
1. Bill Weasley is a curse breaker there and it is the safest place to hide things, besides Hogwarts
2. Bear with me, this is a bit abstract. Has anyone ever played D&D and there were 'bags of holding' where you could store stuff, but all the stuff stored in all the bags in existence went to the same place when it was stored and could be removed from any bag of holding by anyone, so it was risky to keep stuff there. Is it possible that the vanishing cabinet (the one the DE’s used to get in to Hogwarts) works the same way? Stuff vanishes when you put it inside and then you can get it out of any vanishing cabinet? I know that as far as we know there are only the two, but that doesn't mean that there aren't more, perhaps Montague just didn't recognize the sound of any of them accept for B&B or didn't tell Draco, or Draco didn't tell us, so maybe LV could have vanished into one and reappeared in any of many of them, taking him to many places that are otherwise guarded against infiltration. Such as....GRINGOTTS, maybe someone has one in their vault there (one of the lower security ones that you may be able to get out of without getting trapped inside forever as we know is the case with at least vault 713, and probably those surrounding it). That would be a possible explanation of how Quirrell, on LV’s orders, was able to break into there in book 1, and a possible way for LV to have stashed a horcrux there in the past. Weak canon evidence that there may be more than just the other one in B&B:
"He never managed to get all the words out," said Fred, "Due to the fact that we forced him headfirst into that Vanishing Cabinet on the first floor."…the twins are then asked if they are worried about getting in trouble for it, then they reply…"Not until Montague reappears, and that could take weeks, I dunno where we sent him," said Fred coolly. This statement could mean a couple of different things, either they don’t know where it goes
at all, or they know that there are many cabinets and that they could have sent him to any one of them.
3. HBP, p. 71 Slughorn tells Harry that Dirk Cresswell who is head of the goblin liason office still gives him excellent inside information on the goings-on at Gringotts. If there was a horcrux hidden there, along with Bill & Fleur, Slughorn may be able to persuade this Dirk fellow to be helpful
4. Sirius’s vault (which is now Harry’s I assume since Sirius left him everything) is #711 and #713 is either DD’s or Nicolas & Pernelle Flamel’s. What is in vault #712?
5. DD has a scar that is an exact map of the London Underground and Gringotts is directly beneath the Underground. Perhaps LV, growing up as a muggle for so many years, had some knowledge of the Underground that other wizards and goblins wouldn’t have and was able to use the tunnels of the subway to break into Gringotts. It has also been speculated that DD might have given himself the scar because he needed the map of the London Underground, but didn't want to lose the map in anyway, so he carved it in his flesh (DD doesn’t seem like the type to self mutilate to me, but…). Further speculation on these lines; Maybe Dumbledore once tried to find out where a horcrux was by getting into Gringotts via other ways than then entrance. But if that's so, it is unlikely that he found anything because, if he had, he wouldn't be searching for Horcruxes anymore and he would have told Harry, for he did tell Harry everything he needed to know.
If he didn't tell Harry about it, it would have been because he didn't find anything.
6. Dragons are rumored to protect Gringotts, that could tie in to the fire element.

P. In the Hogwarts lake
1. With the Grindelows and all the other creatures in there to protect it, it would be safe. Plus he could have
added his own curses to the safe-keeping.
2. Also brings him closer to Hogwarts.
3. The lake could also be a home for several snakes...and we all know what LV is...A parselmouth...!
4. You would need to take air for protection/survival (opposing elements)

Q. In the Prefect's bathroom - LV was a Prefect so he would have had access while he was at school and know where it was after he left

R. Stuff based on the sorting hat song:
1. Brave Gryffindor from wild moor:
a. A moor (sometimes spelled moore) is usually a wild, upland place, and there's no specific geographical connection. We have Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor in the South-west of the country. There are the North Yorkshire moors in the north; and moorland in the north-west and north-east England, too.
b. However, there is a clue in book 1 (sorry don't have it here). Hagrid tells DD that Harry "fell asleep over Bristol" when he took Sirius' motorbike to bring baby Harry to Privet Drive. If you draw a line from Surrey (Guildford, or Godalming) to Bristol, and extend it out a bit, it lands in South Wales. The area around Brecon and the hills known as Brecon Beacons count as moorland. Jo Rowling would probably have known this area as a child, living close to Bristol. (It has been noted, however, that there was a 24 hour time difference between when Hagrid took Harry from the rubble of GH and delivered him to DD in Surrey, so the extrapolation above probably only points to where Hagrid kept Harry for that time.)
2. Fair Revenclaw from glen:
a. The Scottish Highlands, a rugged area of mountain ranges, bleak moorlands, and deep, narrow valleys known as GLENS. Glen is a specifically Scottish word that means valley. Say the word "Glen" to a Brit, and they immediately think of Scotland, and probably the Highlands, north of the line connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh. Also, the 9 Glens of Antrim.
3. Sweet Hufflepuff from valley broad:
a. "Valley Broad" could mean anything. There are broad valleys all over the UK, so there is no clue there really, but North of the Cheviot Hills, in Scotland, are the Southern Uplands, an area of rounded hills and BROAD VALLEYS. The maximum elevation here is 850 m (2,800 ft), and much of the area consists of moorlands used for grazing sheep. North of the Uplands is a broad valley known variously as the Central Lowlands, the Scottish lowlands, or the Midland Valley.- Could this be Sweet Hufflepuff from valley broad?
4. Shrewd Slytherin from fen:
a. Fens (swampland) ties into Slytherin's water theme.
b. Fen means only one thing to the Brits (according to a Brit, not me): the area centered on Ely in the region of East Anglia. The fens are low-lying areas of land, with fields interspersed with rivers, canals and drainage channels. No caves in fenland. The Fens are (or were) are mysterious places, hard to navigate; dangerous for strangers. The large, hump-shaped area called East Anglia has the flattest lands in the lowland zone. The inlet called the Wash is located off East Anglia’s northern coast. The Wash was once surrounded by the flat, swampy areas of the Fenlands, or the FENS, most of which has now been drained.
f. On a different note, a bit of etymology on the name Salazar: Antonio Salazar was the fascist dictator of Portugal for 36 years until his death in 1968. Though never officially an ethnic cleanser, he was a colonialist, who ruthlessly put down ethnic uprisings his country's colonies in Africa.
5. The above locations could make sense as LV used a cave for the locket horcrux, maybe on the Cornish coast.
6. "Fogou" is the name given to certain underground chambers and passages found in Cornwall. The word fogou is derived from the Cornish for "cave" The chamber of the Pendeen Fogou is not of typical fogou construction, being a simple void hollowed out of the Rab. "Rab" is a conglomeration of granite particles bound together with clay, a sub-soil which is found commonly in Cornwall.
7. It was later posted that they didn't GO to the Norfolk Broads (N. East Anglia) to find Slytherin's Horcrux. So that sort of scuppers that theory. The broads are inland waterways and the locket's hiding place was a seaside cave.
a. If the clues for the locket in the books discount the fen for the Locket, we can't start looking in Wales for Huffelpuff's, Scotland for Ravenclaw's and the moors (Cornwall, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Yorshire Ireland even....) because it's too much ground to cover (accept that they can Apparate now) and we've no pointers to these places in the books.

S. Crouch’s house
1. In GoF, LV hid there after he freed Barty Jr, and put the Imperious curse on Barty Crouch, Sr.

Thanks again to AmberD for all her hard work. If this list triggers any ideas, please share them in the main Horcrux thread.
