In Jane Austen's Emma there is plenty of humour to be found, especially with characters such as Miss Bates and Mrs Elton.
In particular I always like reading Miss Bates' endless dialogues, especially when she frequently interrupts herself and then forgets her point. What humourous moments or quotes had you chuckling? Are there any characters you feel were simply there for comic relief? When I reread Emma, I always enjoy fact that Emma not only thinks she should never marry, but Mr. Knightley should never do, either! This is early on, before she's aware of her feelings for him. It's all so obvious in hindsight.
A scene that makes me laugh every time is that in the carriage between Emma and the deluded Mr. Elton! -------------------- Summer's lease hath all too short a date... |

When Emma envies harriet's artless grief about Mr Elton. She thinks that she would llike to have such feelings but realises it is rather to late in the day to set out to become simple minded. It just makes me smile every time I read it.
That and all Mr Woodhouses talk of food. QUOTE Oh, and probably my favourite bit is when he sort of makes Mr Perry agree that cake is bad for you, and then there's a rumour that little Perrys were seen in town each with a piece of Miss Taylor's wedding cake I really liked this bit too, and all the conversations about gruel. It is amazing how normal Emma is when you think about her father |

I really don't know why, but the part of the book that seems to amuse me the most was discussion between Knightley and Mrs Weston re Emma and Harriet's friendship. To hear a gentleman have such interesting opinions about why Harriet was not suitable just made me giggle.
