My first time through Deathly Hallows I was reading at a frantic pace... the last half of the book was read over seven hours straight. Near the end things seemed disjointed, confusing - then all of a sudden we're 19 years later - I didn't want it to end, HATED it to end... who were these stupid kids getting on the Hogwarts Express now? I didn't want them to exist.
I grumbled over it for a few days. Got depressed. I've just finished my first reread at a comfortable pace, taking breaks as I read and discovering in my tired rush to the finish line I'd missed some wonderful passages. I'd skipped over the trio being saved by Luna, Seamus, and Neville's patronses. I didn't get the full effect of Dumbledore's speech in King's Cross. The time lost in the forest wasn't so bad once I knew where it was going. I had grumped about not being proper closure with Ginny, but I missed how she backed down from fighting only for Harry, how she was helping after the battle, how she insisted Luna take Harry to the Ravenclaw Common room and not Cho, and how a romantic kiss after losing Fred wouldn't have quite fit at the time. All is forgiven, Jo. You've written a worthy end for Harry Potter. And I thank you. Anyone else felt better on the reread? -------------------- "Ron, you know full well Harry and I were brought up by Muggles!" said Hermione. "We didn't hear stories like that when we were little - we heard stories like 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' and 'Cinderella'-" |
