Harrys says he wouldn't have noticed the Leaky Cauldron if Hagrid hadn't pointed it out. Does this mean that harry was too much of a muggle that day? Was Lillys side of the family coming through to strongly? And if Muggles can't see it what do Hermiones Parents see?

I think as only magical people could see it, Harry wouldn't have looked at it twice. the Dursleys didn't encourage him to ask questions, so there would probably be little way for him to find out that others couldn't see it.
Maybe if he was wandering along at his own pace, he might have been drawn to it, without realising, due to the magic used to conceal the pub.

Maybe it's a Muggle repelling spell. You can only see it if you know what you're supposed to be looking for.

Well, I've walked down that very street-- or something very like it in London-- and the streets adjacent and there are many little narrow shops with faded doorways. (It may have changed as this was pre-Blair.) It would have been easy to walk past an old pub and not think anything of it.

What Harry does describe is something akin to a optical effect. He says the Muggles "eyes slid from the big book shop on one side to the record shop on the other as if they couldn't see the Leaky Cauldron at all."

It's funny. We are so used to glossy, in-your-face marketing and branding and signage, that we get quite used to places being "highlighted" for us. I remember wandering into an old pub off Lincoln's Inn Fields; it had a tiny door, no windows that I can remember and precious little in the way of signage. If I hadn't seen it written up in my guidebook as an ancient pub, I'd have walked past it thinking it was nothing more than a curious place for law clerks.

Yes, only Hagrid and Harry can see it. And that's so true of some wonderful places. There's a diner I love to eat breakfast. It is usually crowded and people 'in the know' know about it. But it's not something that would ever be frequented or looked for by out of towners or business types. It's strictly an artists and locals hand out. Vernon Dursley would have squinted at its grubby window and craned his neck looking for the nearest donut shop.

davidenglish, I've walked down that street too! I was deliberately looking out for it. I think I spotted it but it was so inconspicous and camoflaged to everything else I still doubt whether it was there. There was no hanging sign sayin 'The Leaky Cauldron was filmed here', or anything.

I think Harry would not have noticed it becuase he did not know what it looked like for one, and he had never heard of it before so he would not have noticed its existence as it had no particular importance to him then.

I also think that only the people who know 'The Leaky Cauldron' can see it.
davidenglish's example with the diner is perfect! Most of us usually realize only these things which we want to see. If something odd isn't interesting to us we just lose sight of it. Sometimes we need somebody else who shows us places and things which we haven't seen before but where we've waked by all the time.

mostly when you're out and about you have a purpose.....you're not usually looking for obscurities.....only that which interests you ......hence the idea for making the Leaky Cauldron obscure for muggles.....i think however if directed into it theycan see it which is why Hermione's parents could get to Diagon Alley

"You're JOKING!" said Fred Weasley loudly.
The tension that had filled the Hall ever since Moody's arrival suddenly broke.
Nearly everyone laughed, and Dumbledore chuckled appreciatively.
"I am not joking Mr Weasley," he said, "though now you mention it, I did hear an excellent one over the summer...."

Ok, this was just a wondering of mine while re-reading. Im glad it sparked some disucussion! I think that you are defintely right, Davidenglish, you don't notice these things, but it would be interesting to know what hermiones parents thought when they were being taken there. How did hermione know to go there? Did dumbledore go and talk to them or were there extra instructions in the letter?

Well first, its the deputy headmaster/headmistress job to get muggle-born students, so Dumbledore wouldn't go. When a muggle-born gets a Hogwarts letter, it is accompanied by someone to prove it is not a hoax. Also, they would have been accompanied to diagon alley by a witch or wizard, like Harry. He was practically muggle-born because he knew nothing of the wizarding world.

I don't think that muggles can see the door to The leaky cauldron(unless they know it's there), but they probably wouldn't care about it if they could see it. It's not like there are any big signs and stuff like that.
