Forget all those academic and literary definitions of what makes a classic. For most of us - we know it is a classic when it is referenced in TV shows, comic strips, modern movies and songs. When modern writers churn out sequels, prequels and retelling in other points of view using our beloved characters. When Hollywood takes it and repackages it for people who can't be bothered to read the original - Emma becomes Clueless, for instance.
So, have you read a Sense and Sensibility spin-off? I'll start: I love the bit in the Vicar of Dibley where Geraldine makes fun of the noise Emma Thompson makes in the movie version of Sense and Sensibility when she discovers that Hugh Grant's character isn't married. Watch it here. (Of course, the joke comes later when she discovers that Harry really wants to marry her and she makes the same noise.) -------------------- ![]() siggy & avatar by theonlysong |
