In June of this year, J. K. Rowling auctioned a card for charity containing an 800-word prequel to the Harry Potter series. The contest crew now invites you to show us exactly what would happen if it were you, and not Jo who was writing a prequel to Harry Potter. In no more than 800-words, write a story based in the Harry Potter universe before the opening of PS/SS. As with Rowling's own prequel, a story about James, Sirius and the motorbike, entries should explore the backstories of more minor characters in the story, and for this reason we have chosen to discourage stories in which Harry, Voldemort or Albus Dumbledore could be seen as the central protagonists.

Rules for entrants
  • Write a story based within the Harry Potter universe that would pre-date the start of Book 1 (i.e when Harry is left in the not-so-capable hands of the Dursleys by Dumbledore and Hagrid) in 800 words or less.
  • The main protagonist of your story cannot be one of the following: Harry, Tom Riddle/Voldemort, or Albus Dumbledore.
  • The events of the story cannot be a continuation (or prelude) to the events of Jo's own prequel, and should instead be based on another incident prior to the start of the books.
  • There is a strict PG-13 rating for the stories
  • There is a limit of one entry per person. All work must be original.
  • All decisions by the judges are final
  • Anyone over the age of 13 can enter the contest, including staff members who are not involved in the judging process.
  • All submissions must be e-mailed to contests@the-leaky-cauldron.org by Sunday, July 27th at 11:59 pm (EDT) with "HP Prequel" in the subject line of the e-mail. Please copy-paste the story into the body of the e-mail and include a name to be used for authorship (real name or Leaky Lounge name).
  • Please refer to our FAQ if you are not sure of something.
  • If you have any questions not answered on the FAQ, or would like to discuss this Contest, please come to the Contest Corner forum of The Leaky Lounge.

Hey bye.gif
I haven't entered a Leaky competition before so I have a question-or-two unsure.gif
  • Will you receive notification that your entry has been received?
  • Is their a shortlist prior to the overall contest winner being announced?
  • Are there runner-up placements i.e 2nd place, 3rd place etc. ?

Thanks a million! thumbup.gif

Hi Azkaban's_Angel! Here's the answers to your questions:

  • We don't send out notificiation when we receive entries.
  • There will be no shortlist announced--only the final winners.
  • Depending on the quantity and quality of the entries, we will award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with the possibility of a Honorable Mention or two.
Good luck. We look forward to reading your prequel entry!

Let's say a certain someone, who shall remain nameless, dashed off a little story for the contest and then sent it in before she should have? (As in, it still needed some work/editing but she was a bit overeager? oops.gif ) Is there any way to send in an edited version, or is it too late once it is submitted? Thanks!

Go ahead and resubmit it with "HP Prequel Corrected Version" in the subject line. This'll enable us to find the old version and easily remember which is the correct version. smile.gif

Okay, I emailed my entry (I had something in my head already); can I also post it in my LJ, or do I have to wait until after the judging is done?

Or have I signed over all rights to the thing?

First time poster here with a few questions.

Is this the only fan fiction connected to leaky or is there a fan fiction site?

Can your contest entry be Maurauders era?

Can it be something (or a part of something) you have posted on another website?

Thank you for your time,

Vampiremouse

You haven't signed all your rights away. Probably the best thing to do, though, is to wait till the contest is finished so people (not that this'll happen) take your idea, accidentally read your entry before creating their own, one of the staff members stumbles upon it, etc. Once the contest is closed, by all means, go ahead and post it where ever you like. smile.gif

Welcome to the Lounge, Vampiremouse!

1) This is the only fan fiction connected with Leaky. There are numerous other fan fiction sites around if you google around.
2) Your contest entry may be Marauder's era. We're really looking for entries to be before Harry's lifetime (specifically stipulated as before he shows up at the Dursley's house).
2) You may send us something you've previously written before or is a part of something you've written before.

Hope those answer your questions!

Thank you for answering...I have thought of another question or two as I look over my existing material as well as my writing notebook for a good stand-alone canidate.

Is it less then 800 words not counting author's note, title, etc.
Can it be a lot less then 800?
Are you disqualified if its 830 words for instance or is this a firm 800 or less.
Does it have to be story format or could it be a poem?
Are original charactors allowed in the piece?
Can it be in the AU grey areas?
What about ratings for violence or sensative topics...can it be anything as long as the author's note tells people what they are getting into?

And finally (unless I think of more questions...lol) I know Dumbledore, Harry, and Voldy can't be the main charactor of a piece. Can they be the secondary charactor? I have several pieces that feature various rarely used charactors, however one of the excluded trio is the secondary charactor in all three of them...are these pieces excluded?
