When did you pick out your kids names? for my 1st (DD) i picked it out right away. All I could think about were names and i did it right away

for DS1 i wanted DH to pick out the name but I got impatient about the end of the 2nd tri and picked it

For DS2 I let DH do it and he dragged his feet till the verry last minute. For some reason it didn't bother me at all. though it did drive my family nuts (expecially as we didn't find out what we were having either). We came up with his 1st name while I was in labour a couple hours before I had him. The nurse asked me if we had names picked out. I said "Ashley for a girl and for a boy......." and shot DH a look and said "we haven't got a boys name" DH piped up and said Michael? So that is how we got his name. AFter he was born the nurse was holding him and asked "So, does Michael have a middle name" I again looked at DH and said "How about yours?" he simply said "alright" and so his middle name became Patrick.

Early in the marriage, before we were even serious about having our first child.

We had boy and girl name settled.

We actually name our son 5 minutes before his grand-parents came to visit him in the hospital. My husband told me "we need a name to introduce him to our parents!" so that's when we named him. It was about 7 hours after his birth. Before that he was "baby" (how original wink.gif) I would say that it will probably be the same with the other kids

My mom and dad had my name chosen for me months in advance. My mom saw a Santa Monica sign while driving down the freeway and thought, "Hey! Great name!" and hence, I am Monica.

For my sister, I think my mom was nearly do when she was reading PEOPLE magazine and saw an article on Princess Charlotte of Wales (or something like that) and my sister kicked, and she was known forevermore as Charlotte.

I had my daughter's picked out a few weeks before she was born...as well, as the boy's name, since they said she was a boy...thank goodness I had a girl's name picked out, too!

As for my parent's...for my brother, Jonathan, it was a name my mum heard on an old radio programme, and it struck a cord with her. My dad, had absolute no say in it. So...

...you have me: Because my father had no say in the naming of his son, he kind of got my mum back for that. She was knocked out for 18 hours, and during this time, my dad had gotten pretty tipsy. So, whenit came time for me to be named, the nurse asked what the name was, and he goes "Oh, that'd be, Susan(full name Susan Anne, I combined the two=Susanne), because it *hic* has flow with her brother's name." Well then, a few hours later, mum woke up...

Let's just put it this way...my dad was affectively "cut off"(no sex)for approx. 4 months. lol.gif darkmark.gif

For our first child we bought one of those 10,000 boy/girl baby name books... At first we were looking at it all the time and my husband wasn't helping with any girl names, just the boys... I'd say something and he would say I hate it and then he would say something and I'd do the same. So we finally wrote the first names that we liked down (knowing that the middle name would be after his middle name if a boy and after my middle name if it was a girl). After that we just kept saying the first and middle names together and even some of our favorite names just didn't go well together with the middle names that were "SET IN STONE"... no changing those.

We finally ended up with a first name for a boy or a girl by the time of our OB appointment that would tell us the sex. So when we left the office we knew what to call the baby (besides the "little one")... and it was really fun for us to have that special time together...

As for my second one... we found out that we're having a girl... but the girl name that we had picked out for our son is TOO popular right now so I don't want to name her that anymore (Emily- I LOVE THAT NAME). However we have finally decided on a name although we had to go threw the baby name book again. But we waited with the second one until after we found out, while we had both names picked out for the first one (we had a lot more free time then). biggrin.gif

Because I'm a bit of a Hermione, I made 2 long lists of boys and girls names that I liked early in my pregnancy (after going to the library to get a stack of baby name books, of course). Then I had my husband go over the list and veto any that he hated, then I made a list with first and middle name combinations and had hubby pick his favourites of those. By the time we found out that we were having twins, we had it narrowed down to 2 or 3 boy and girl names each that we both really liked. When we found out that they were boys, "twin a" was immediately one name, and "twin b" immediately another, and although I thought it was silly to name them before they were even born, from the moment we saw them on the ultrasound they were named. We didn't tell anyone except for really close friends and family though, because we didn't want negative feedback on names that were already given.

When I found out I was pregnant, I had 2 names I really liked: one boy, one girl... Problem was, my spouse didn't like the girl name... I looked and listed names for weeks! Then we found out it was a boy... and spouse realized he thought there was something wrong with the name! doh.gif To finally end up coming back to this one months later... So I was about 7 months pregnant before he agreed to this name... But, as he says, the option of changing his mind once he sees the baby's face is still there... doh.gif So I guess, even though I'm 2 weeks away from my due date, I can say we aren't still done with the name issue!!!!!!!!!!! headdesk.gif

To answer the original question, we waited to name our son until after he was born.

My husband was a lot of trouble picking out a girl name. Before our US I repeatedly told him he better hope its a boy because if it was a girl she wouldn't have a name! He is much more picky than I am, so our strategy was this: I made a list of names, he vetoed all of them, I used his reasons for vetoing various names to narrow the list down, I presented the shorter list, he tried to veto, but I had counter arguments this time, he counter argued some of my counter arguments and the short list was formed! biggrin.gif Everything is a process with us!! We hope to have agirl next, and it will be interesting to see how this naming thing goes the second time around!!

Don't worry about changing the name if you or your husband wants to do so. Before my husband was born his mom had a name picked out for him and then changed her mind after she saw him for the first time. We also have friends of a friend who had picked out a name for the second daughter and decorated her nursery and all her baby things with the name, only to change it after she was born! So, we decided to wait and name our son until we saw him. That's not to say we went in blind, though. We had narrowed it down to 2 first names (my grandfather and his) and a few middle name choices for each first name choice. (And if neither of the first names "felt" right, we would try to use them as middle names instead!) After our son was born I held him for a few moments. Then he was cleaned off and tested while I started to recover (natural child birth with no pain meds). When his dad brought him back over we took a few minutes to settle on the right name. All in all it was probably 30-45 minutes before he was named, but i was pretty busy and it doesn't seem like it was that long!

Like Mrs. Puckle, we didn't tell our family's the name possibilities. We didn't want to be influenced by either positive or negative feedback. biggrin.gif

For my first DS, we had his name picked out YEARS before he arrived. biggrin.gif
For DS #2, it was in the first trimester.
For DS #3, we had waffled and then settled by the beginning of the third trimester...or so we thought. Then, two weeks prior to delivery I had a Dream his name was James, a name we had NEVER considered before, but it just felt right. I ran it past DH and he was, like-thats's IT!
ANNNDDD...for DD, I thought we had it wrapped from day one, but ended up in delivery with three first names to choose from(the middle was a given). I didn't name her until about 8 hours AFTER she was born. biggrin.gif
