The movie adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird was released in 1962. Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his role as Atticus Finch, and it is rumored that Harper Lee presented him with her father's watch. Have you seen this movie? Do you think it was a faithful adaptation of the book? Was the casting accurate? Do you think this movie should be remade?

(1) Yes (2)Yes (3)Yes (4)No

Although there were a great many plot ommissions I loved this movie. Gregory Peck was spectacular, as were Mary Badham(Scout), Phillip Alford(Jem) and John Megna(Dil). I felt it really captured the spirit of the story which is all one can expect from a film adaption. Like the Wizard of Oz or Miracle on 34th Street, they were so fantastic the first time and they remain such timeless classics that no remake is necessary.

I remember going to see the movie right after it was released. I hadn't started high school yet. My parents were hesitant to let me go, but since I had already read the book, they agreed.

I liked the movie, but I distinctly remember being disappointed in all that had been omitted. Still, the movie doesn't really introduce anything irrelevant, like those romantic subplots Hollywood is always inserting.

The casting was great! All the characters were believable. Gregory Peck, in my humble opinion, was superb. For a long time it was hard for me to think of him as anyone other than Atticus Finch.

I really doubt much is to be gained by a remake. If anyone attempts it, I say keep the black-and-white format, the dirt streets, the moderately grainy quality. Extend it to about three hours if possible.

I saw the film after studying the novel, and I loved it. Yes, there were differences. There always are. But it was brilliantly done; good turn by the actors, great storyline and so poignant!

No, it shouldn't be remade. It'd lose the magic; it works so well in black and white, and the simplicity is just superb.

I agree that it should not be remade, so much of the magic is lost when classics are remade and they so often just fall down flat, part of the love we have for them is down to nostalgia and that can't be recreated. Its quite a while since I watched the film so I can't clearly remember which parts were cut but it did tell the story, though I do have it on DVD and should watch it again. I've always felt that Gregory Peck was well cast as Atticus, he has a wonderful quiet strength about him that suits Atticus perfectly.

Like the majority of you I say that it shouldn't be remade. It is a classic and it just wouldn't be the same if it was remade.

I loved all of the casting, even though right now I don't remember what some people in the movie looked like. Also I had totally different people pictured in my head, but I always picture characters really weirdly.

I read the book Freshman year and then saw the movie, but to be honest I don't remember what was taken out of the movie. I think that the movie was beautifully made and it stayed pretty close to the book (it also had the right mood and feeling and that is pretty important). Even though it left stuff out, it was still a great movie.

Yes, I have seen the movie(many times)
I agree with Azkaban's__Angel that the casting was superb. I would add to that list a very young Robert DuVall as Boo Radley.
And, no, I do not think the film should be remade. It's a classic! Films like the Wizard of Oz are classics that stand the test of time and are still entertaining. Usually a studio that wants to remake a classic does so not out of a desire to make an even better film than the original, but to make more money. What would be the benefit of re-making To Kill a Mockingbird? To present it in color? Part of the film's atmosphere comes from its being shot in black and white. I think there was color film available at the time this original was shot, so the idea to shoot in black and white was probably the director's decision. Call me a purist, but I am not one of those people who think that all of the older black and white films need to be colorized. There's a good reason that the director decided to present a film in black and white.
And there's another reason. "Lightening doesn't strike twice." How could there be another cast that would be as convincing as the one in this film? Just one mistake in a character casting would ruin the film. Harper Lee put her stamp of approval on Gregory Peck as Atticus, who represented her father (fictionally of course), and it's hard to think of another actor who could do that role the same justice today.

I most defintely agree, the movie shouldn't have to be remade...especially with the circumstances of which when the movie came out which was when, the late 40s and 50s.. It was a decent movie of it's time.. I myself have read the novel and felt it followed the plot quite accurately, although I don't easily appeal to movies like " To Kill a Mockingbird." I watched it in Eight grade with my class and I really liked it.

It would be a travesty to remake this beautifully filmed black and white classic. If it were remade I doubt that it be as true to the novel. Modern filmmakers would try to put all sorts of modern spin on it. The parts of the book and the movie that are left to the reader/viewers imagination are what makes this such a poignant movie.

I caught the last portion of this film on TV recently, from the court case onwards. I was just flipping through channels and recognised what it must be immediately. I really enjoyed the part I saw, and all the actors were superb. I was a little disappointed with how quickly Tom died, there wasn't much time to let everything sink in, but still that's just part of the while book-to-film process I suppose.
