I recently came across a really neat device created by Amazon called the Kindle. It's revolutionary, in my opinion. The specs include:
  • Revolutionary electronic-paper display provides a sharp, high-resolution screen that looks and reads like real paper.
  • Simple to use: no computer, no cables, no syncing.
  • Wireless connectivity enables you to shop the Kindle Store directly from your Kindle—whether you’re in the back of a taxi, at the airport, or in bed.
  • Buy a book and it is auto-delivered wirelessly in less than one minute.
  • More than 190,000 books available, including more than 105 of 112 current New York Times® Best Sellers.
  • New York Times® Best Sellers and New Releases $9.99, unless marked otherwise.
  • Free book samples. Download and read first chapters for free before you decide to buy.
  • Top U.S. newspapers including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post; top magazines including TIME, Atlantic Monthly, and Forbes—all auto-delivered wirelessly.
  • Top international newspapers from France, Germany, and Ireland; Le Monde, Frankfurter Allgemeine, and The Irish Times—all auto-delivered wirelessly.
  • More than 1000 top blogs from the worlds of business, technology, sports, entertainment, and politics, including BoingBoing, Slashdot, TechCrunch, ESPN's Bill Simmons, The Onion, Michelle Malkin, and The Huffington Post—all updated wirelessly throughout the day.
  • Lighter and thinner than a typical paperback; weighs only 10.3 ounces.
  • Holds over 200 titles.
  • Long battery life. Leave wireless on and recharge approximately every other day. Turn wireless off and read for a week or more before recharging. Fully recharges in 2 hours.
  • Unlike WiFi, Kindle utilizes the same high-speed data network (EVDO) as advanced cell phones—so you never have to locate a hotspot.
  • No monthly wireless bills, service plans, or commitments—we take care of the wireless delivery so you can simply click, buy, and read.
  • Includes free wireless access to the planet's most exhaustive and up-to-date encyclopedia—Wikipedia.org.
  • Email your Word documents and pictures (.JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .PNG) to Kindle for easy on-the-go viewing.
  • Included in the box: Kindle wireless reader, Book cover, Power adapter, USB 2.0 cable
Basically, you can download, anywhere and on the go, thousands of books onto an easily-readable platform. There is a really great video on the amazon page that I linked to above that highlights all the great features of this technology.

So, my question is, what are your thoughts?
Is it something you would consider buying?
I wish I could hold it in my hands before potentially buying it; I am also weary that since this is a first-go product, in the near future they may come out with smaller, better technologies, and potentially also may be cheaper. There also poses the question of whether reading from a computer-like device is as good as the familiar feeling of reading from a book.

Happy discussing!

Jeff, this has been on my wish list since Amazon first introduced it. If I had the money to spare, I would definitely own this baby! It would be so much more convenient for traveling to bring one device instead of a satchel of books. Even when not traveling, I always have a book with me and there are times I finish it before my errand or whatever is completed and I am left with nothing to read until I get back home. (I know there are worse things, but this is my personal pet peeve.)

The only thing I wouldn't like is that if I want both the traditional book and the e-book I need to buy it twice. I think they ought to be bundled in price somehow. read.gif

I wouldnt buy it just because for the money that I would spend just on the device alone I could probably buy about a hundred books with it. and then you would also have to pay for the files to read the books so it would be wasting money to buy it then the book files. when you could just go get the book itself at the store. and what will happen if by chance that site fails and is shut down? all the book files you buy are saved online there so if it were to go under you would loose not only your money but the books as well. I think I will stick to paper books. but thats just me. and I cant stand staring at a screen and trying to read for very long. it makes my eyes and head hurt.

Firstly, I would be VERY, very, very surprised if Amazon were to shut down in the near future. Do you know much about Amazon? Their company is huge.
Secondly, your books are stored online just in case your kindle were to be lost, stolen, or broken. At least this is my understanding. That means that it is not like you sync your kindle to the amazon store every time you turn it on. Rather, the books are stored on memory in the kindle.
Thirdly, I've read the reviews on amazon and they say that the kindle is not like other electronics screens- it does not hurt your eyes any more than reading a regular book does.
And lastly, I did the math... if we assume you only buy books that are brand new, hardcover, costing $20.00... you will be saving $10 every time you buy that hardcover book through the kindle store. So, once you've bought 30 books, you already have made back your money on the purchase. Assuming you read a lot.... after that point, you're actually saving like 50-60% on most purchases on books. Some books are actually more than $20 as well, and if they are new releases/New York Times bestsellers, they only cost $10. Good savings there.

Just a little insight smile.gif

I was under the impression that it was saved on a different site than amazon but maybe I missread. I know they wont shut down.... I still prefer paper though. I almost never buy hardcovers I'd rather have paperback and Wal-Mart sells most between 4 and 10 dollars, the only books I have ever bought in hardcover were some of the Harry Potter and the Twilight saga books. I just don't see the point is spending 360 dollars (plus tax and s&h) on something just to spend more money to put stuff on it. call me old fashioned but I like to look at the books and hold them in my hands. maybe its a comfort thing or maybe its the fact that I'm broke.... lol

That's true. I was just playing devil's advocate... I don't have one of these either. I love holding the book in my hand as well... I wish I could try out the kindle before buying it, if that ever became a possibility.

Plus, if there was ever a major world disaster (old SciFi theme here), and we no longer had electricity or access to computers, we wouldn't be able to read our collection. At least with paper books, you would have them and could carry them around with you. wink.gif

I have been wanting to test drive either the Kindle or the Sony e-reader, very curious about them. I tend to buy a lot of books and am having a problem storing them. The portability of the units appeals to me plus the books are cheaper than the printed version. No doubt if I loved a book I would still go out and purchase it plus there are titles, HP for one, that aren't available in this format so the device wouldn't entirely stop my shopping. (Don't tell my husband...lol.)

I got myself an E-reader
http://www.bookeen.com/ebook/ebook-reading-device.aspx

Nice thing. My bags is no longer heavy because of books smile.gif Reading might not be as nice as on paper, mainly beacause the the long turning page, but you get used to it easily.

Yeah, the Hp books not availlible. Got some craked pdf, converted them to prc, and voila... I'll gladdly buy these, but hey. Later maybe ?

Drm's sure are an anoyance. Most are cracked though. In the prc cases, you have no trouble uncrypting if you know your own key. Fisrt thing i do is getting ride of that, don't want trouble when i re-install windows, or get a new reader.
You usually download the E-books on the reader (or how do you read in the train without internet connexion hey ?), so you can backup.

I was happy to see the harry, a history was on E book format smile.gif though the prc version is scrwed a bit. Firts letters get weird. (Melissa, if you see this, hit your publisher!)

Pdf on e-readers? Mostly, forget it ! Screen is most of time too small, meaning you need to zoom.
But that will do fine for fanfic and anything pure text after convertion to prc (or whathever e-book format you uses)

I bought one this summer and really haven't used it much. Many times when I search for a title, it is not on there. I spent a lot of money on it and am disappointed. It really is not the same feeling as having a book in your own hands. Plus, I love the bookstore and having the new book smell.
