THE LEAKY QUILL - MARCH 2009
Letter to the Editor - Lisa
Ah, Spring has sprung. The Daffodils are beginning to shoot up from the greening earth and the thoughts of young lads and lasses turn to… LeakyCon. What else did you expect me to say? LeakyCon is less than 75 days away, and behind the scenes everything is coming together with an ease that has us at turns scared and in awe.
This volume of The Leaky Quill is devoted to the Informal Programming that will be at the conference. We’ve talked about the Ball and the Wizard Rock, now it’s time to talk about art and blood and scavenger hunts, and…wait. This is still a family show, folks. It’s all good. So read on and learn about some of the fantastic events we have in store for you at LeakyCon 2009.
But before we dive into the informal programming, let me give you a little inside scoop. We are very, very close to announcing not one, not two, but three fantastic key note speakers for LeakyCon. The key note speakers are special events, and will require the purchase of a separate ticket for each event. Tickets are limited and sure to go fast, so be sure to grab up yours as soon as possible.
And now…on with the informal programming!

Let’s Get Informal- A Sneak Peak at LeakyCon’s Informal Programming - Josh
Submissions for Informal Programming closed in early February, and ever since we’ve been working to organize a line of truly fantastic events for hours of fun. For those with a flair for the theatrical, James Hinsey has a line-up of theatrical workshops for the crafty con-goer. Learn to make costumes and wands from inexpensive and easy to find materials and have some live action Harry Potter fun at home!
For those with a desire to tread the boards, Leah Cornish and friends will be holding an Improv Workshop that will work to develop improvisational and performance skills using the work of Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling as a starting point.
Been wondering what a performance of The Fountain of Fair Fortune would be like? Join members of The Butterbeer Experience, Ministry of Magic, The Parselmouths, The House of Black, and Hawthorne and Holly for a Fair Fortune rock opera experience!. The show will require audience participation!
So you’ve read Harry, a History but you still have some burning questions about the Harry Potter phenomenon? We’ll have a chance for you to sit down with New York Times bestselling author Melissa Anelli! Discuss the fandom, the phenomenon, and the book itself with Melissa and other fans, just like you.
We’ll also have a common room full of fun and games, or just a few poufs to lounge on and relax with friends. Don’t miss out on the auction of HP items for charity, or the blood drive for the Boston Children's Hospital.
We hope you’re as excited to participate as we are. More information to come as May draws near!

LeakyCon’s Got It Going On with Informal Events! - Chloe and Edward
As we get closer to LeakyCon, the number of fun events and activities grow. In this newsletter, we'd like to share with you three most exciting events we have in store for you at LeakyCon 2009.
First, attention all artists and art lovers! From now until the end of March, we will be accepting fan art submissions to be displayed at Leaky Con in May. A special art gallery is planned, where submissions can be viewed in the Stanbro Mezzanine of the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Any medium of art is welcome, from a stained glass replica of Hogwarts to a life sized Grawp sculptures to hand knitted Pygmy Puffs to a sketch or painting depicting a favorite scene.
Artists are not required to attend LeakyCon for their art to be displayed, so while they will be sorely missed, the starving artists among us that can't afford to find a way to Boston can still have their beautiful work on display! Interested artists should fill out this form before April 10.
Next, all those who love to hunt for treasure will want to take part in a Scavenger Hunt around the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Set to start in the hotel lobby on Friday at 10AM, the hunt will have you go through the hotel on a hunt to decipher clues or solve riddles to help you on your quest. Hunters will have the option of either searching for Horcruxes or Hallows around venue. Prizes will be awarded and fun will be had by everyone!
Finally, after touring the Art Gallery and taking part in the Scavenger Hunt, sit back and relax in the Common Room. All are welcome! The Common Room will be the place to hang during LeakyCon, where you can meet new friends and play a variety of Harry Potter games. Many games including Wizard Chess will be set up in the Common Room, and attendees are welcome to bring their own games to play as well. Start a group game of HP Clue with your friends, or leave it there for the weekend for others to play as well. A LeakyCon volunteer will be in the room at all times to ensure fun will be had by all.
The Common Room will also feature two boards which will let groups set times and dates for game play with other members. A second board will be available for those who want to organize meet ups outside the Common Room. Impromptu rock shows or discussions may pop up on the board without notice, so be sure to keep your eye in the Common Room for the latest fun happening at LeakyCon 2009.
See you in Boston!

Blood Drive Comes to LeakyCon - Lisa
Take a few moments out of your LeakyCon experience to give the gift of life. On Friday, May 22nd, the Bloodmobile from Boston Children’s Hospital will be at the Park Plaza Hotel. Donate between 10am and 5pm. You must be at least 17 years of age to donate blood. We encourage everyone at the conference who can donate to do so; can you imagine how many people we could help?

The Pipes, The Pipes Are Callin' - Farrah LeWinde
Happy March, my little cherubs! Can you believe we’re mere weeks away from the grand festivities of LeakyCon! With so little time left, I find my to-do list constantly full of shopping, stylist appointments, voice lessons, aerial acrobatics training, and gown fittings all in preparation for a weekend of fun. I find so little time to relax and enjoy my hobbies… namely, social studies (Editor’s Note: Farrah frequently refuses to keep this column family friendly, and “social studies” was the best euphemism I could come up with –Josh).
One might say I’m, blessed with the Luck of the Irish, and I would have to agree. Why kittens- just last year I met a lovely Irishman named John Harney who stole away with my heart like a pot of gold. On St. Patty’s Day we laughed, danced, and staggered our way along the green waters of the Chicago River. If you haven’t seen it, the river on St. Patrick’s Day is quite a romantic verdigris. Sadly it was not to last, as I soon after had to flee to Texas for various occupational reasons that could prove hazardous to my health. I’m told John is now a grad student at UT, but despite my persistent... er, innocent… trips to campus, I’ve yet to lay eyes on him again.
So my wish, bunnies, that you all had a luck-filled Patty’s day for me. I was far too busy to partake in green beverages or don a tam o’shanter, but I had a four leafed clover tucked in my bosom to keep the spirit alive.
