First of all I want to say - Steve I love you and think you are great!

Now that we have that established.........

Basically, Jo wants to stop the publication of Steve Vander Ark's book The Harry Potter Lexicon because she says it will be an intellictual property rights infringement of her encylopedia.

...........What do you guys think?

im a bit torn here.
i can see where JKR is coming from, because she wanted to release the books and give the profits to charrity.
on the other hand though, steve has put huge effort into the lexicon, and hasnt been doing it to rip JKR off.

I like this thread, thank you for starting it, Hufflepuff31.

I'm going to interject before this one really takes off and ask everyone that, before posting, you read the Rules of the Lounge. While discussion is certainly encouraged, flaming people is against the rules...so please just be mindful of that.

I really dislike that Jo and Warner Bros are doing this to the Lexicon. Seeing as Jo AND WB have both thanked Steve in the past for his work, and rewarded him with recognition and exclusive interview opportunities, this action is kind of disgusting to me. I am in the camp where I believe Steve and the other contributors at the Lex have worked hard and now deserve to reap some financial benefit for their work. MuggleNet has done this, not once, but twice! (They, too, are publishing an encyclopedia!) Of all the fansites on the web, I think the Lexicon is highly respected and an amazing resource. I think that there is enough "money" to go around, and that Jo is thinking wrong about her own Encyclopedia. All die-hard HP fans are going to buy her encyclopedia...she need not worry about the Lexicon or anyone else publishing their own. HP fans have proved they will spend $$ when they want something!

I hope this is resolved quickly, and that Steve and his team keep their chins up. It's a bit outrageous to me that this is even happening...and I truly feel terrible about it.

I'm afraid I'm in two minds as well.

Jo doesn't seem to mind the website but there's no profit being made there where as there would be if he sold the books...

But she didn't mind all the pre-DH discussion books that were making a profit out of her ideas...

And lets face it we;d all have bought her book even if we had bought Steve's 'cause there'd be new stuff in hers...

I don't know what to think. I just hope the website can stay.

I'd watch out if I were you Mugglenet.

I'm shocked, confused, and saddened. It saddens me that this potentially creates bad blood between a beloved author and a great fan site. It also saddens me to see the nasty comments toward JKR and Steve. Neither deserve that, this is a legal matter that a court needs to decide. I just hope it comes to an amicable and logical solution so that we can all move on.

For reasons obvious in my .sig, I'll be watching this one pretty closely.

Certainly, I find it hard to imagine that anyone buying any official HP book wouldn't also buy every official piece of information out there to be had. I can't believe Steve's book or any other book (his is far from the only one out there) is going to stop a single dime from going to charity from JKR's efforts.

I agree with futureweasley.. I was really outraged on hearing this news as well.. And like future said, Steve and his camp have put an awful lot of effort into their site and its only fair they get some profit out of it. What I can't understand however is Jo's stand on this whole situation. Does she honestly believe her fans would not buy her books, especially when she is going to reveal exclusive information which most definitely will not be there in Steve's version. I'm with Steve on this one. Why can't she be supportive at such a time.. I was already starting to get annoyed at Jo and her lawyers for their suit against the people in India and now this. Grrrh.. I hope this gets resolved soon and Steve doesn't get a hard deal.

Although I do respect Jo's intentions and her concern for her charities.

I too am in two minds about this and was shocked to read the news that Steve and the Lexicon where being sued.

I also see that Jo is hoping to write her own definitive 'Encyclopedia' about the Harry Potter world, after all it is her own work and she hopes to raise lots of money for charity with it, I will of course be in the queue to buy such a book.

The lexicon is a great piece of work that us fans enjoy and read with much pleasure a great resource and a lot of people have put in many hours of work. The fact that they want to publish this and earn some money back for their labours is understandable, but the bottom line is the information they want to publish is all J.K. Rowling and WB copyright.

A book of facts which Steve and the Lexicon is wanting to publish is that, Mugglenet and others have been books of opinions and speculation and so do not really infringe copyrights in the same way.

I do hope they can talk this through and some sort of agreement can be reached.

If it's like breaching the copyrights thing ,what about mugglenet's book??and afterall, Jo herself told that Lexicon is her natural home.....

On the other hand,Jo is doing this for charity.........Well,I'm in a dilemma.....
