As we know from GoF (Bloomsbury pg. 84) and DH (pg. 117 and 322) the Lovegoods are the next Wizard neighbours to the Weasleys.

Luna, when meeting Ron on the Hogwarts express (OotP pg. 211-213) acts weird for a girl who presumably(?) has met a boy (Ron) for the first time: She doesn't need to ask his name (in contrast to Harry and Neville), she reprimands him for his behaviour towards her fellow Ravenclaw (Padma) without even presenting herself, and she laughs insanely at his joke.

We have no evidence from the text, but I get the feeling that they must have known each other from early on, perhaps from the time of her mother's death when Xeno might have wanted her out of the way to clean up their house; he could very well have placed her in the care of the Weasleys.

Please feel free to discuss.

Hmmm...ponder.gif Interesting.

The Weasleys did seem to know the Lovegoods, but not that intimately. Dunno about Ron, but Ginny tells Neville and Harry that Luna is a Ravenclaw in her year. If she had known Luna from home, she would have added that bit as well, seeing as Neville was having strong doubts in sharing a compartment with her.

And though it is true that the Lovegoods were their nearest neighbours, they seemed to live quite a way off from the Burrow. So it would have been improbable for Ron and Luna to have bumped into each other too often. And Ron was as alarmed at Luna's laughter at his joke as everyone else was, telling us that he didn't know her too well either. smile.gif

And also I think, with her father being in the press and Arthur working for the ministry and them being sort of nieghbors, she would have heard of the Weasley family and the parents would have known each other, they were after all invited to Bill in Fleur's wedding. Also in DH when they go to the Lovegood home Ron says he only ever knew they lived over that way. So I dont think they played together as friends but I do figure they were aware of each others families.

The Lovegood's are mentioned in Goblet of Fire as one of the families that got tickets to the Quidditch World Cup.

Living in the country myself, I know that my "neighbors" aren't always next door, but I still call them that.

I think Luna has probably heard of Ron from Ginny, or Padma. I also think that Luna is just that sort of person.

was that she must have had an idea who Ron was. I'd never laugh like that at the joke told by a stranger. Of course, Ginny had had already three years to pass information about Ron in their shared classes.

I get what you are saying, Shnoing, but if Luna knew Ron from their home, he must have known her too. though like you said, Ginny probably told her all about her brothers so that she knew Ron quite well by hearsay.

And also, what Luna would do and what a normal person might do are two vastly different things. biggrin.gif

Well we heard of the Lovegoods in the previous book, briefly. They couldn't attend the Quidditch World Cup final. And Ginny knew her from Hogwarts, she was in her year, but different houses. But I should imagine the Lovegoods don't assosiate much with other wizards, they seem loners. So Ron probably only recognised the name.

Seeing as the Lovegoods live fairly close to the Weasley's (Discovered in the Deathly Hallows), it makes perfect sense that they know each other, whether much contact was made or not, I'm sure they intereacted a bit, but not enough to for Ron to make the connection.
